WWI – Political impact • Political Turmoil • 4 collapsed empires : Russia, Germany, Austria-Hungary & Ottoman • Radical political parties emerged to build new social orders from the chaos • Colonies began to revolt as colonial troops returned home – Europe was no longer seen as invincible • Financial Situation • France to Russia - homes, farms, factories, roads & cities in rubble

  4. The Paris Peace Conference The Big Three – January 1919 • 27 nations participated • France, England & United States dominated • Russia was immersed in civil war

  5. The Treaty of Versailles, June 1919 • Forced Germany to accept full responsibility for the War • Ended the Paris Peace Conference and Punished Germany in 3 Areas • Financial Reparations • Territorial provisions • Military provisions

Failures of the Paris Peace Conference • Within 20 years of signing the treaty, Europe was at war • Germany simmered with revenge for the humiliation • Italy was angry, it did not receive promised territory • Japan was angry for not securing claims to China • Russia resented being excluded from the peace process & for the creation of new nations on land that had been part of Russia • Peoples from Africa, Asia and the Middle East felt betrayed by the Europeans • The failures of the Paris Peace Conference lead to the rise of Fascism, dictators, revolution and World War II
