  1. Summer School Cliff Notes Academic Advisement Chalon H401, 310-954-4070 Advisement@msmc.la.edu

  2. Where? • 2 Year Institutions--Junior Colleges • Los Angeles Community College District • Out-of-area/state colleges • 4 Year Public Institutions • Cal States • UC’s • Out-of-area/state public institutions • Other Private 2 Year and 4 Year Institutions

  3. What classes CAN I take? • Articulation Agreements • GE only: http://www.msmc.la.edu/pages/2122.asp • GE and Some Majors: http://www.msmc.la.edu/pages/167.asp

  4. Articulation Agreements Online

  5. Articulation Agreements

  6. What classes SHOULD I take? • General Studies Requirements • Acceptable courses to fulfill GE requirements are outlined in the Articulation Agreements • If no Articulation Agreement exists, please email the course description to Advisement@msmc.la.edu. You should retain a copy of the email response you receive and attach it to the Transfer of Credit Clearance Form.

  7. What classes SHOULD I take? • Major Requirements • Articulation Agreements • If no Articulation Agreement exists, and/or the course you wish to take is not in the Articulation Agreement, please contact your Department Chair, with the course description of the course you wish to take, and the MSMC course that you wish to substitute. Only Department Chairs determine the applicability of course work to the Major.

  8. Units and Grades • Only 9 units allowed • External courses must be taken for a letter grade, NOT credit/no credit • Must earn a minimum of ‘C-’ in order to transfer course to MSMC** • Grades DO NOT transfer to MSMC, and are not computed in GPA **Freshmen English courses must be passed with ‘C’ (2.0) grade

  9. Course Repetitions • Summer course replaces MSMC course, but grade not calculated into GPA • GPA is raised because ‘bad’ course grade no longer computed in GPA • For example, if you earned a ‘D’ in English 1A, retook the course in summer school and earned an ‘A’... • ‘D’ grade would still appear on transcript, BUT would no longer be calculated into GPA

  10. Forms • GS-Transfer of Credit Clearance Form • Advisor signature required • Major-Transfer of Credit Clearance Form • Advisor signature required • Department Chair approval for applicability of course toward major requirement is required • Forms are available in the Academic Advisement Center and should be turned in to the Academic Advisement Center before course is taken.

  11. Transfer of Credit Clearance Form • One college per form • Correctly note the department and course number of the class at the community college • Include the title of the class as it appears on their schedule--this correlates with the class name on the transcript (and they have to match!)

  12. Step-by-Step to Summer School • Look up Articulation Agreement online • Pick up / Download GS or Major Transfer of Credit Clearance Form • Research potential summer schools • Go online to check on their class schedule • Complete an application to the college • Make sure you send in a copy of your transcript if they request one.

  13. More Steps to Summer School • Complete the TCC form and obtain appropriate signatures and approvals • Return completed form to the Academic Advisement Center • Attend summer school classes…every day!

  14. Step-by-Step backto the Mount • Upon completion of your summer classes • Request that the college send an official transcript directly to the Registrar’s Office • Transcripts must be sent directly to the Registrar’s Office. Hand delivered transcripts will NOT be accepted! • Once the Registrar’s Office receives your summer school transcript, they will: • Match your TCC form with the transcript • Apply the credit to your MSMC transcript

  15. FAQ’s • Can I take more than 9 units during the summer if I take 6 during the first session, and 6 during the second session? • No. The policy in the Catalog states that you are only allowed to take 9 units. If you seek an exception to any policy, you must file an Academic Petition and get approval from Sr. Joseph Adele Edwards, BA Dean.

  16. FAQ’s • I need more units to graduate by December 2008. How do summer school units affect me? • The MSMC residency requirement states that students must complete at least 30 of the last 39 units at MSMC. • Residency what?????

  17. Residency Requirement = Mount units = External units Last 39 units applied toward MSMC degree. At least 30 of the units swimming in the pool must be MSMC units.

  18. FAQ’s • I need to take Math 2X in summer school. What course is that at the JC? • Math 2X is the Intermediate Algebra course at most community colleges.

  19. FAQ’s • Is there a deadline to file the TCC form? • No, but the earlier you get the form in to us the better. This way we can notify you if there is a problem with the course you intend to take before you take the class.

  20. FAQ’s • I took classes at the community college while in HS. Why haven’t I been awarded the credit? Do I need to complete a TCC? • Because you were not yet a Mount student when you took the courses, NO TCC is needed. • The courses taken at the college must NOT have been used to complete HS requirements of any kind (a letter from a HS official verifying this is required).
