  1. Geospatial One-Stop Standards Presented by Julie Binder Maitra FGDC Standards Coordinator at URISA 2002 October 28, 2002

  2. Overview of Geospatial One-Stop • E-Government is a key part of the President's Management Agenda • Geospatial information enables e-government • To effectively use geospatial information from any source, we need the NSDI • Geospatial One-Stop accelerates the NSDI • Geospatial One-Stop spatially enables the delivery of government services

  3. Goals of Geospatial Information One Stop • To provide fast, low cost reliable access to Geospatial Data for government operations. • To facilitate G2G interactions needed for vertical missions such as Homeland Security. • To facilitate the alignment of roles, responsibilities and resources. • To obtain multi-sector input for coordinating, developing and implementing geographic data standards

  4. Current Model Data User Data User Data Use r Data Use r Data User Data User Data User NSDI Gateway Portal Portal Portal Data Producer Data Producer Portal Data Producer Data Producer Data Producer Data Producer

  6. Modules • Develop and implement data standards for NSDI Framework Data. • Fulfill and maintain an operational inventory of NSDI Data and publish the metadata records in the NSDI Clearinghouse Network. • Publish metadata for planned data acquisition and update activities. • Develop and deploy prototypes for enhanced data access and web mapping services for geospatial data. • Establish a comprehensive electronic “Portal” as a logical extension to the NSDI Clearinghouse Network.

  10. Why The ANSI/INCITS Process? • To surmount obstacles to non-Federal participation • INCITS L1 draws membership from Federal agencies, private companies, and professional organizations • To create “national” rather than “Federal” standards

  11. FGDC and INCITS Processes Compared FGDC • 1 Develop Proposal • 2 Review Proposal • 3 Set Up Project • 4 Produce Working Draft • 5 Review Working Draft • 6 Review and Evaluate • 7 Act on Recommendation • 8 Coordinate Public Review • 9 Respond to Public Comments • 10 Evaluate Responsiveness to Public Comments • 11 Act on Recommendation • 12 Steering Committee Approval INCITS • 1 Approve Proposal • 2 Notify Public • 3 Technical Development • 4 Public Review • 5 Management Review • 6 INCITS Approval • 7 ANSI BSR Approval • 8 Publication

  14. GeoSpatial OneStop Implications for local governments and regions • National standards for the geospatial data community • Equal partners with Federal agencies on Geospatial One-Stop Board of Directors • Standards for data exchange allow for extensibility • Active engagement of all sectors of the geospatial data community

  15. How to get involved • Visit the FGDC home page at http://fgdc.gov, then Select “Geospatial One-Stop” and register for participation • Contact Federal coordinators for standards • Join INCITS (www.incits.org) to vote on Framework data content standards and other candidate American National Standards
