  3. Army • Got in trouble with the law for stealing two cars. Had the choice between joining the army or spending two years in jail. He enlisted on May 31, 1961 and was considered him to be a subpar soldier because he sleep on duty, had little regard for regulations, had to be supervised, and showed no skills as a marksman. Discharged after one year.

  4. Early Influences • Hendrix was influenced by blues artists such as B.B. King, Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Albert King and Elmore James,rhythm and blues and soul guitarists Curtis Mayfield and Steve Cropper, and the jazz guitarist Wes Montgomery. After recording with Little Richard he stated, "I want to do with my guitar what Little Richard does with his voice".

  5. “Chitlin Circuit” • A string of performance venues throughout the eastern and southern US that were safe for African American musicians.

The Jimi Hendrix Experience • After becoming friends with Rolling Stones Keith Richards he introduced Hendrix to producer Chas Chandler who brought Hendrix to London to form The Jimi Hendrix Experience with guitarist-turned-bassist Noel Redding and drummer Mitch Mitchell, both English musicians.

  7. Woodstock • Hendrix was advertised to play the Woodstock Music Festival, along with many of the other biggest rock groups of the time. Hendrix played a two hour headlining set to an estimated 400,000 people. Hendrix was up for three days and collapsed from exhaustion after the show.

  9. Electric Ladyland • The third and final album of new material by the Jimi Hendrix Experience released in Oct. 1968. Topped the Billboard 200 album chart for two weeks in Nov. 1968. Hendrix was disappointed that the album had to be finished so quickly and felt it could have been better, given more time

  10. His legacy Hendrix left behind more than 300 unreleasedrecordings. His influence helped development ofhard rock, helped paved the way towards heavymetal, took blues to a new level, great influence to funk, helped development of funk rock, and even influenced hip hop. He is ranked #3 on VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock behind Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin. His style influenced many guitarists including Stevie Ray Vaughan, Kirk Hammett of Metallica, and Mike McCready of Pearljam and others.

  11. “3 J’s” • Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and Jim Morrison died at the age of 27 of a drug overdose.
