  2. PIE process What? A process for . . . • clarifying our purposes and defining success in fulfilling them, • learning how our purposes are being fulfilled, • sustaining what’s working, and • improving where needed.

PIE process Why? • To more fully accomplish ETSU’s mission—our calling. • To help you be more successful and find greater satisfaction in your work. • To make it easy(er) for your unit to provide documentation for SACS. • YOU DECIDE. Divisions and units should tailor the PIE process to fit their needs.

  4. PIE process Who? • Virtually every unit on campus will participate. • The office above each unit will review and approve its report. • Vice presidents will also review and approve all reports done in their divisions.

  5. PIE process When? We will take three years to make the PIE process fully operational.

  6. PIE process In 2006-07 units will . . . • Identify their purposes & define success in fulfilling them. • Propose ways to learn about how their purposes are being fulfilled. DEADLINE THIS YEAR: May 15, 2007 Approved PIE reports on purposes, definitions of success & ways to learn due to Bill Kirkwood

  7. PIE process In 2007-08 units will . . . • Begin learning about how their purposes are being fulfilled. • Develop plans for responding to what they’re learning.

  8. PIE process In 2008-09 units will . . . • Begin implementing plans developed in 07-08. • Continue learning how purposes are being fulfilled. • Develop or revise plans for responding to what they’re learning. (as needed)

  9. PIE process Thereafter, units will . . . • Report annually on what they learned about fulfillment of purposes in past year. • Report annually on implementation of plans to respond to what they learned. • Submit new or revised plans. (as needed) • Revise purposes, definitions of success or ways of learning about purposes. (but only as needed)

  12. PIE process Your purposes . . . • Supply the “Why?” to everything you do. • Are broader and longer-lasting than goals, objectives, tasks and projects.

  13. PIE process Purposes are broad and long-lasting. GOOD! The Department of Dance seeks to prepare students for careers as professional dancers, primarily in the areas of modern and jazz dance. A goal, not a lasting purpose. The Department of Dance seeks to double the number of major performances it produces each year.

  14. PIE process Purposes are broad and long-lasting. GOOD! The interlibrary loan office seeks to support learning, research and creative activity by giving students, faculty and staff access to resources not available through our library or online. A goal, not a lasting purpose. The interlibrary loan office seeks to increase by 25% the number of partner schools with which we have loan arrangements.

  15. PIE process Your purposes reflect your unique mission. Doesn’t express unit’s mission The Office of Advisement seeks to help our students succeed. GOOD! The Office of Advisement seeks to help our students succeed by providing timely, accurate information about university requirements and regulations.

PIE process Sample purposes: Service unit • The Interlibrary Loan Office seeks to support learning, research and creative activity by giving students, faculty and staff access to resources not available through our library or online. • The Interlibrary Loan Office seeks to assist users at other libraries by giving them access to resources available through our library.

  17. PIE process Academic departments should identify purposes in each of these areas: Educating students (Write one purpose for each undergraduate and graduate program in the department.) Research or creative activity Service

  18. PIE process Sample purposes: Academic unit • The Department of Dance seeks to prepare students for careers as professional dancers, primarily in the areas of modern and jazz dance. (= educating students) • The Department of Dance seeks to prepare students for careers as teachers of dance in private and public schools. (= educating students)

  19. PIE process Sample purposes: Academic unit • The faculty and students of the Department of Dance seek to advance dance choreography, performance and pedagogy. (= research or creative activity) • The Department of Dance seeks to enrich the lives of all people in the university’s service region by encouraging and enabling them to experience dance as audiences or as performers. (= service)

  20. PIE process When writing purposes . . . • Use simple, direct language anyone can understand. • Write each purpose as a single sentence that expresses only one purpose. Don’t even think about using semicolons!

  21. PIE process Some purposes are hard to achieve. • Please list them anyhow. Don’t play it safe by only listing sure things. • You don’t have to guarantee success, only that you’ll learn about what’s happening and act on what you learn.

  22. PIE process Some purposes are hard to measure. • If they’re important, please list them. There are many ways to learn how purposes are being fulfilled. Martin Luther King didn’t say, “I have an assessment plan.” He said, “I have a DREAM.”

  23. PIE process Definitions of Success When can you say a purpose is being  fulfilled?

  24. PIE process You should define success in fulfilling each of your purposes. • Use simple, direct language anyone can understand. • Write each definition of success as a single sentence. • Be realistic, in light of the resources and conditions your unit has to work with.

  25. PIE process Definitions of success may describe . . . • the results that occur OR • the manner in which members of a unit do their jobs OR • what other people* experience . . . when a purpose is being fulfilled. * our students, other ETSU units, people in our region

  26. PIE process When you list more than one definition of success for a purpose, ALL must be met to say the purpose is being fulfilled.

  28. PIE process Purpose:The Interlibrary Loan Office . . . gives students, faculty and staff access to resources not available through our library or online. This purpose is being fulfilled when: • Users receive prompt replies to their inquiries about interlibrary loan services. (= results) • Insofar as possible, users receive requested materials promptly. (= results) • ILO staff give knowledgeable help in locating requested resources. (= how people do their jobs) • Users experience friendly, courteous service. (= what people experience)

  29. PIE process Example #2 Definitions of success for an academic unit’s purposes

  30. PIE process Educational Purpose: The Department of Dance . . . prepares students . . . for careers as professional dancers, primarily in the areas of modern and jazz dance. This purpose is being fulfilled when: • Students graduating from the Performance Concentration display skill and artistry in their primary area of dance sufficient to make them highly competitive candidates for positions in regional or national dance companies. • Students graduating from the Performance Concentration have a solid mastery of ballet technique (non-pointe). • Students graduating from the Performance Concentration are proficient in at least one area of dance different from their primary area.

PIE process This purpose is being fulfilled when: • Students graduating from the Performance Concentration understand the health and fitness needs of professional dancers. • Students graduating from the Performance Concentration are familiar with important figures, periods and turning points in the history of dance in western civilizations. • Students graduating from the Performance Concentration are familiar with at least one form of dance in a culture different from their own.   32. PIE process NOTE: Definitions of success for an educational purposes are . . . student learning outcomes Now on to definitions of success for research/creative activity and service . . .

  33. PIE process Research/Creative Activity Purpose: The Department of Dance seeks to advance dance choreography, performance and pedagogy. This purpose is being fulfilled when: • Department of Dance faculty choreograph and produce original works of merit, performed by GU students. • Department of Dance faculty make presentations or lead dance workshops at regional or national professional conferences. • Department of Dance faculty publish noteworthy articles or comparable works on dance choreography, performance or pedagogy.

  34. PIE process This purpose is being fulfilled when: • Department of Dance students choreograph and produce original works of merit, either independently or in collaboration with faculty. • Department of Dance students make presentations at professional conferences or lead dance workshops, either independently or in collaboration with faculty. Research/Creative Activity Purpose, continued . . .

PIE process Service Purpose: The Department of Dance seeks to enrich the lives of all people in the university’s service region by encouraging and enabling them to participate in dance as audiences or performers. This purpose is being fulfilled when: • In addition to inviting the public to all of its performances, the department produces at least one major performance annually that is targeted to the general public. • The department conducts at least one event annually in which interested people of all ages and abilities may participate as dancers. • The department helps dance organizations in our service region publicize their performances.

  36. PIE process This purpose is being fulfilled when: • Members of the public who attend department performances find them to be enjoyable and fulfilling experiences. • The department obtains external funding to make possible at least one production each year which pre-K through 12th grade students and teachers may attend at reduced cost. • Pre-K through 12th grade students and teachers who attend department performances find them to be enjoyable and fulfilling experiences.   37. PIE process What’s next? Proposing ways to learn about whether each of your definitions of success is being met. • There are many valid ways to learn about your purposes—some are formal assessment practices, some are not. • You and those who review your report will decide which make the most sense for you.
