Dive into the fascinating world of chemical elements with a hands-on research project! In this activity, you'll select six elements from common household items and gather essential information, including each element's name, symbol, atomic number, and mass. You'll also explore their properties and identify household substances where they can be found. Utilizing the periodic table and online resources, make your findings neat and complete for display in the school hallways. Uncover the science around everyday materials!

MEET THE ELEMENTS! PROJECT
Elements • All elements are abbreviated using a capital letter, and sometimes a lowercase letter. • Ex: • Ca = Calcium • N = Nitrogen • H = Hydrogen • Li = Lithium
In the next slide, you will see the chemical formula for the household items we cut out yesterday. • Please pick 6 elements from the household objects you would like to research.
CHEMICAL FORMULAS • Ammonia 2. Borax 3. Moth Balls 4. Alcohol 5. Cream of Tartar • NH3 Na2B4O7C6H4Cl2C3H8OKC4H5O6 EXAMPLE: I will find information about the elements C, H, and K • 6. Milk of Magnesia 7. HydrogenPeroxide 8. EpsomSalt 9. Chalk 10. Graphite 11. Salt • Mg(OH)2H2O2 MgSO4 CaCO3 CNaCl • 12. Vinegar13. Sugar 14. Dry Ice 15. Charcoal 16. Sand 17. Diamond 18. Baking Soda • C2H4O2 C6H12O6 CO2 C SiO2 C NaHCO3

Instructions • You will be using your periodic table, please take it out. • For each element complete a box with the following information: • Name of the Element • The Element’s Symbol • The Atomic Number • The Atomic Mass • 3 Properties of this element (is it shiny? Malleable? Heavy? Metal?) • 3 common/household substances your element can be found in • Use the pictures you cut out! • Write the chemical formula next to the picture. • For #5 and #6 you may use your technology to look up the element. • This will be posted in the school hallways so be sure it is neat and complete!
Step 1 • You will be using your periodic table, please take it out. • For each elementfind the following information: • Name of the Element • Ex: C = Carbon • Cl = Chlroine
Step 2 • For each elementfind the following information: • The Element’s Symbol • Ex: The symbol for Carbon is C • The symbol for Fluorine is F
Step 3 • For each elementfind the following information: • The Atomic Number • Ex: The atomic number for Silicon is 14
Step 4 • For each elementfind the following information: • The Atomic Mass • Ex: The atomic mass of Silicon is 28.086 • Click the next slide to see a BIG periodic table
Step 5 • For each elementfind the following information: • 3 Properties of this element • (is it shiny? Malleable? Heavy? Metal?) • 3 common/household substances your element can be found in • Use the pictures you cut out! • Write the chemical formula next to the picture. • For these steps you may use this website: http://www.ptable.com/ and this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uy0m7jnyv6U • This will be posted in the school hallways so be sure it is neat and complete
