  1. Independent work of students

  2. Individual work which is done by the students during the academic semester is calculation-and-graphic assignment (CGA).

  3. Calculation-and-graphic assignment (CGA) is an independent research conducted by a student. Implementation of CGA improves knowledge and skills obtained by the student during study of the "Medical Informatics" course

  4. The purposes of writing CGA are: • classification, consolidation and expansion of theoretical knowledge and practical skills of the student; • acquisition of experience working with literature and other sources of information, and ability to synthesize and analyze scientific information, to develop own approach to the problem; • ability to use information and computer technology for applied medical problems; • development of skills necessary to master specialized software; • conduction of a thorough analysis of student’s own research and forming meaningful conclusions about the quality of the results.

  5. Implementation stages of calculation-and-graphic assignment (CGA): І. Individual work according to the chosen topic of CGA. ІІ. Data Processing.

  6. The first stage of CGA The first stage of CGA is performed during the first module. It includes the following parts:

  7. The first stage of CGA 1.Choice of CGA topic Topic of CGA is chosen by student independently and it should be agreed with the teacher.

  8. The first stage of CGA 2. Determination of work’s relevance The description of topic relevance should not be verbose. Several sentences are enough to describe the crux of the problem.

  9. The first stage of CGA 3. Determination of work’s objective Objective reveals the purpose of research, and it should describe the specific steps necessary to get results. The objective of the study is specified in the set of tasks. These tasks give an idea of what should to be done to achieve the goal. Tasks (usually 4-5) are formulated with verbs as a list of actions: "to learn...", "to analyze...", "to build a model of ...", "to estimate...", "to define ...", "to compare ...", "to explain ...“and so on.

  10. The first stage of CGA 4. Selection of literature and other information sources relevant to the chosen theme It is necessary to conduct literature search and to choose 5-10 sources relevant to the chosen theme. Search can be done: •   through library catalogues •   using Internet search engines •   with other available means.

  11. The first stage of CGA 5. Collection of data required to explore the chosen topic Process the chosen sources and select the data necessary for your research

  12. The first stage of CGA 6. Systematization and structuring of data Organize data in tables and charts

  13. The first stage of CGA 7. Presenting output of the first stage in a text editor І STAGE of CGA should include the following: 1.Titlepageaccordingtothesample (seeAppendix 1). 2.Contents. 3.Relevance. 4.Specifiedobjectiveofwork. 5.Structureddatawiththeindicatedsourcesofinformation. 6.Annotatedlistofusedsources. Number - from 5 to 10 sources.

  14. The first stage of CGA • Requirements for the text version of CGA: • format of pages - A4; • font - Times New Roman; • font size - 14; • line-to-line spacing - one and a half intervals; • alignment - the width of the page; • margins - 2 cm; • the names of the structural parts and sections - in capital letters, bold, centered, the names of the sub-sections – in lowercase letters (except for the first letter), bold, center; • the distance between the header and the main text - one interval; • every structural part (section) starts with a new page; • pagination - top center; • the number on the title page and table of contents is not put; • tables should have titles and be numbered; • pictures, graphs, charts should have titles and be numbered.

  15. The first stage of CGA The first stage of CGA is presented in print version

  16. The first stage of CGA Evaluation of the first stage of CGA From 2 to 12 points, depending on the quality and design correctness of CGA

  17. The second stage of CGA The second stage of CGA is performed during the second module. It includes the following parts:

  18. The second stage of CGA 1.Choosing the method of information processing. 2. Substantiation and description of the selected method. 3. Information processing. 4. Receiving results. 5. Interpretation of results. 6. Formulation of conclusions. 7. Issuing a report on the work done.

  19. The second stage of CGA At the end the conclusions are drawn. They must match the tasks listed in the objective logically and by number. One task - one conclusion (!). Thus, each of the conclusions is "connected" with the objectives of the work. Conclusions should be based on the student’s own analysis of the problem and correspond with the tasks of CGA.

  20. The second stage of CGA Required size of work is 15-20 pages of printed text (not including the list of information sources and appendixes). For defense of the calculation-and-graphic assignment presentation should be made in addition to five-minute oral report. II stage of Calculation-and-graphic assignment should be submitted in electronic and printed form. Files of electronic version and the presentation should be in MS Office 2003 format and submitted on CD-R or CD-RW disk. The electronic carrier should include a text file (Word), necessary appendixes, files with the results of processing (Excel), presentation (Power Point)

  21. The second stage of CGA Evaluation of the second stage of CGA From 2 to 12 points, depending on the quality and design correctness of CGA

  22. Defense of CGA Defense of CGA (16thpractical class) The student prepares an electronic version of CGA, creates a presentation, published work or Web-site. Each student publicly protects own CGA

  23. Defense of CGA Requirements for content and design of presentation 1. The presentation should be done in Microsoft Power Point HR/2003 format on the theme of CGA. 2. Presentation should be corresponding with a five minute report on CGA. 3. Content of the presentation should be clearly structured. Each new slide should logically follow the previous and simultaneously prepare for the next one. 4. The optimal size of presentation is no more than 15 traditional slides. 5. Amount of text in presentations should not exceed 35%, the rest - illustrative material (pictures, graphs, charts, diagrams, etc.).

  24. Defense of CGA Requirements for content and design of presentation 6.Slide number 1 should contain the following information: - name of educational establishment and its department where the work was written (font size - no less than 24); - discipline, topic (font size - at least 28, bold); - surname and first name student, faculty, group (font size - no less than 24); - surname, name and patronymic of a teacher (font size - no less than 24); - the year of creation of presentation (font size - not less than 24). 7. Slides number 2 - 3 should describe the relevance of the topic and the objectives to be achieved in the course of work (one slide - no more than 15 lines of text). 8.The last slide (slides) must contain the conclusions to work (one slide - no more than 15 lines of text).

  25. Defense of CGA Requirements for content and design of presentation 9.All slides (except the first) must include the serial number, located in the upper right corner (the font size - not less than 20). 10. Each slide (except the first) has to be named, font size for titles - no less than 24. 11. Optimal design of presentation – is to use color schemes "light text on a dark background" or "dark text on a white background." If colors of background and text match, it is recommended to use the text design with "shadow". 12. Background images should not detract attention from the content of the slide. 13. Font size recommended - 24. 14. The maximum number of text information on a single slide - 15 text lines in fonts Arial or Verdana, size - 24.

  26. Defense of CGA Requirements for content and design of presentation 16. Maximum amount of graphic information on one slide - 2 images (photographs, diagrams, etc.) with text comments (no more than 2 lines for each). 18. Use single style. 20. Use no more than three colors on one slide (for example, the first for background, the second for the header, the third for the text). 21. Use animation, sound and video files only when it is justified and really necessary to improve the perception of the material. 22. File presentations should be recorded on CD-R or CD-RW.

  27. CGA recorded on flash memory is not accepted !!!
