  2. Monday 10/26 Power Words Daily Language Practice The night the bed fell is a funny story about James Thurber’s family. Each of his relatives were strange • Paradox: • Definition: a statement that is seemingly contradictory or opposed to common sense and yet is perhaps true. • Sentence: Japan is a paradox in religion; citizens belong to two different religions. • Verbatim • Definition: word for word. • Sentence: Please report verbatim what the principal told you to do.

  3. Tuesday 10/27 Power Words Daily Language Practice Old Aunt Melissa who cold whistle like a man thought she would die on South High Street. Aunt Sarah Shoaf piled all her possession outside her bedroom door. She did this in a nervous way. • Malaise • Definition: an indefinite feeling of debility or lack of health often indicative of or accompanying the onset of an illness. • On Thursday evening, my malaise turned into a very bad cold. • Exorbitant: • Definition: Exceeding in intensity, quality, amount, or size the customary or appropriate limits. • There is usually an exorbitant amount of noise in this room.

  4. Wednesday 10/28 Power Words Daily Language Practice Thurbers’ bed suddenly fell with a tremendous crash. The bed had always tipped over. The family was screaming, running, and they started to shout. • Arid: • Definition: having insufficient rainfall to support agriculture. • Two years ago, North Carolina could be described as arid. • Verdant: • Definition: green in tint or color. • My lawn is verdant with clover.

The dog an animal that never liked Briggs, jumped him. • Momentous: • Definition: important, consequential • It was a momentous occasion when I received my bachelor’s degree at NCSU. • Modulate; • To adjust to or keep in proper measure or proportion.. • Please modulate the volume in this room.

  6. Friday, 10/30 Power Words Daily Language Practice Mother thinked that Father was dying. Thurber turned on the light, unlocked the door, and went to the attic. • Mollify: • To soothe in temper or disposition, appease • When the dogs get to fussing, I have to mollify one or more of them. • Cacophony: • Harsh or discordant sound. • Any time that anarchy abounds, there is a cacophony of noise.
