Enhancing Single-thread Performance through Control-Flow Decoupling Techniques
This paper explores Control-Flow Decoupling (CFD) methods to optimize performance and energy consumption in both single-threaded and multi-threaded applications. We reveal that effective branch handling can significantly improve execution efficiency and reduce energy use. By separating loops with branch predicates and control-dependent instructions, we enhance fetch separation and minimize mispredictions. Our implementation in GCC demonstrates that CFD effectively addresses performance challenges while maintaining low complexity, facilitating better memory latency tolerance and energy savings.
