History • Soulpepper Theatre was founded by a group of 12 actors, including Martha Burns, Ted Dykstra and William Webster. • The actors wanted to bring a major theatre company in Toronto now that Masterclass Theatre was closed. • The actors were able to garner the Masterclass charity number and begin laying the foundation for a theatre company.

  3. History continued • After being denied theatre space by Mirvish, Don Shipley offered a summer space in 1998 at Harbourfront. • Don Carlos and The Misanthorpewere the opening plays for the theatre’s first summer. • In order to find the money the fit the $400,000 operating budget, actors went so far as to sell hot dogs. • The company has since moved from Harbourfront to the new Young Centre for the Performing Arts. • They also now do more than 400 performances a year.

  4. Mandate • The Soulpepper Theatre Company has what is known as a tri-mandate. • The three corners of the tri-mandate are as follows: • 1. Performing great classical theatre • 2. Artist Mentorship • 3. Youth Outreach • This has been their mandate since they opened.

  5. Size • The Soulpepper Theatre company has been in two venues since its inception. • It was at the Harbourfront venue from 1998 until 2006 when the Young Centre for the Performing Arts opened in the Distillery district. • The Young venue is made up of Tank Houses 9 and 10. • The centre holds 4 performance theatres, seating approximately 100 each.

  6. Operating Budget • In 2008, Soulpeppers Revenue came from 4 different sources. • 1. Box Office = 44% • 2. Donations and Sponsorships = 43% • Government Grants = 9% • Other = 4 %

  7. Facilities • At present, the Soulpepper Theatre Company has one main facility. • This facility is the Young Centre for the Performing Arts. • The Centre has 4 theatres in 2 buildings which are connected by a lobby area.

  8.
