  5. Nationalism • A feeling of intense pride of one’s homeland. • Examples: • The unification of Germany in 1871 • France’s lose of Alsace-Lorraine to Germany • The Balkans: Serbian Slavs wanted all of the Balkans and Austria-Hungary’s German-ism annexed Bosnia

Imperialism • Great Britain, Germany and France needed foreign markets after the increase in manufacturing caused by the Industrial Revolution. • These countries competed for economic expansion in Africa. Although Britain and France resolved their differences in Africa, several crises foreshadowing the war involved the clash of Germany against Britain and France in North Africa. • In the Middle East, the crumbling Ottoman Empire was alluring to Austria-Hungary, the Balkans and Russia.

  8. Assassination Archduke Franz Ferdinand and Duchess Sophie at Sarajevo, Bosnia, on June 28th, 1914.

  9. Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand was killed in Bosnia by a Serbian nationalist group called the Black Hand who believed that Bosnia should belong to Serbia.

  10. Domino Effect Austria blamed Serbia for Ferdinand’s death and declared war on Serbia. Germany pledged their support for Austria -Hungary. Russia pledged their support for Serbia.

  11. Domino Effect Germany declares war on Russia. France pledges their support for Russia. Germany declares war on France. Germany invades Belgium on the way to France. Great Britain supports Belgium and declares war on Germany.

  14. M-B-Z • Mexican Revolution: After the forced takeover of the Mexican government by General Victoriano Huerta, Pres. Wilson refuses to recognize the new government. After Wilson sent in troops, the Mexican people rioted and some attacked the U.S. in guerrilla warfare, thereby escalating the conflict. • British Blockade: The British navy blocked Germany from obtaining supplies. Germany responded with U-boats and a pledge to sink any vessel found around Britain. The major crisis coming from this was the sinking of the British liner Lusitania, killing 1,200 people; 128 American. • Zimmermann telegram: A telegram from Gen. Arthur Zimmermann, instructing the German ambassador to offer the Mexican government the “lost territory in Texas, new Mexico, and Arizona” if they would ally with the Germans in a war between the U.S. and Germany. British intelligence intercepted the message and turned it over to the U.S.
