  1. Session 1Jesus the “miracle worker”

  2. What is faith? “I have come to the conclusion that the most important element in human life is faith” (Rose Kennedy, mother of J.F.K.)

  3. What does “faith” mean? In the Bible, faith is believing the message of God is true, and then putting our trust in God and in his Son Jesus

  4. What does “miracle” mean? What Alex Ferguson did with a group of very average players was a miracle! It was a miracle that nobody was hurt when the car crashed off the road

  5. What does “miracle” mean? In the Bible, a miracle is an amazing event that is explained by the power of God

  6. 3 stories of faith and miracles • We will look at these stories and notice 3 things about each one: • The SITUATION needing help • The FAITH of people coming to Jesus • The RESPONSE of Jesus in doing amazing miracles

  7. Story 1: A Desperate Ruler • V18 (S): Rich important man has a daughter who has died • V18 (F): Publicly begs Jesus; believes a touch can raise her back to life again • V19, 23-25 (R): Jesus is willing to go; mourners told to leave; death is not final ‘only sleeping’; brings her back to life!!! (in private)

  8. Story 2: A Desperate Woman • V20 (S): 12 years of bleeding meant she was unclean, weak and alone • V20-21 (F): comes to Jesus; touches his cloak; believes he has power to save (although her faith is mixed with superstition) • V22 (R): talks to her like family; confirms that faith is why she is then healed (in public)

  9. Story 3: Two Desperate Men • V27 (S): Two men who are blind, struggle to survive • V28 (F): follow Jesus; recognise him as “Son of David” a title for God’s special king; don’t give up; believe Jesus can make them see • V28-30 (R): speaks to them privately; tests their faith; heals with a touch (in private)

  10. Putting the stories together… • Who we are doesn’t matter to Jesus…what matters is we have faith in him • Faith may be big or small…what matters is that it is real faith in Jesus • Faith in itself is not enough…we need to have faith in Jesus if we want to be saved by God • Jesus does the kind of thing God promised his king would do – so we can trust him (11:2-6)

  11. (If you want to do some more reading on Jesus and his miracles, read Matthew 14:13-36)

  12. Questions to Consider • What do we learn about Jesus from these 3 stories? • What is similar and what is different in each of the stories? • Is there anything that surprises, interests, or puzzles you about Jesus? • Some people say it doesn’t matter what you believe in, just as long as you have faith. Would you agree/disagree? • What would be the big challenges for you to put your faith in Jesus?
