  2. Journal • If war is so universally reviled around the world, why are there so many wars? • What can people do to prevent future wars?

  3. Wilfred Owen1893-1918 • One of the most poignant modern poets. • “The Poetry is in the pity.” • He studied Keats, and in France modernist French poets. • Greatest influence was his experiences in WWI.

  4. Wilfred Owen1893-1918 • At age 21 when WWI began he enlisted in British army. • Poetry based on his experiences in muddy trench warfare, and military hospitals. • He was killed in action in 1918 at age 25 -- just 7 days before war ended.

  5. Dulce et Decorum Est • “It is Sweet and Honorable to Die for Your Country.”

  6. Oxymoron • A figure of speech that combined apparently contradictory ideas to create a strong emphasis. • E.g. -- Tough Love; Cold Comfort; • “...parting is such sweet sorrow.”
