  1. Biological Macromolecules Tested standard: SC.912.L.18.1 Also assesses: SC.912.L.18.11

  2. Benchmark Clarifications Students will: Identify and/or describe basic molecular structure of carbohydrates, lipids, proteins and/or nucleic acids. Describe primary function of those molecules. Explain how enzymes speed up reaction rates by lowering the reaction’s activation energy.

  3. You are analyzing a compound in the laboratory. You find that it is made up of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen in a ratio of 2 hydrogen atoms for each carbon atom. How will you classify the compound—which of the major macromolecules does this describe?

  4. Athletes are often concerned with the question of how much protein they need in their diets because of the requirement of growing muscles for protein. Just as muscles need the basic building block of protein, protein itself has basic building blocks. Which of the following are the basic building blocks of protein? • Nitrates • Amino acids • Monosaccharides • Nucleotides

  5. Based on the students’ results, at what pH does catalase work best: 1,4,7, or 10? • Which of the following are building blocks of catalase? • Monosaccharides • Nucleic acids • Lipids • Amino Acids
