  1. Conflict • Conflict is a disagreement or clash between ideas, principles or people. Good or Bad? • Some believe conflict is bad and should be avoided because it can create problems.

  2. Two Ways to Think About Conflict! • Conflict as Opportunity- According to theologian and mediator David Augsburger (1992), this approach to conflict is based on four assumptions: • Conflict is a normal, useful process. It can offer opportunity for strengthening relationships. • All issues are subject to change through negotiation . People should think of creative solutions to conflict.

  3. Direct confrontation and conciliation are valued. Attempt to recognize conflict and work through it in a productive and open way. • Conflict is a necessary renegotiation of an implied contract-a redistribution of opportunity, release of tensions, and renewal of relationships. It is worthy of celebration. Augsburger, D. (1992). Conflict mediation across cultures. Louisville, KY: Westmister/John Knox Press

  4. 2. CONFLICT AS DESTRUCTIVE- • Conflict is a destructive disturbance of peace • The social system should not be adjusted to meet the needs of members; rather, members should adapt to established values • Confrontations are destructive and ineffective • Disputants should be disciplined

  5. Destructive Conflict • We hear and see destructive conflict in our everyday lives. Even the smallest of conflicts can be destructive. Celebrities can have conflicts with paparazzi or even with fellow celebrities and is always in the public eye. This sometimes may have a way of destroying their reputation and the way others view them.

  6. Cultural Views of Conflict • Cultural groups that see conflict destructive avoid it • Some cultures are subject to a specific approach to conflict- • Norwegians learn early in life to avoid conflict. • The Amish believe conflict destroys harmony throughout the community. • The Amish are nonresistant and other than confrontation they are silent and show avoidance.

  7. Conflict Destroys Harmony • An example of how conflict destroys harmony is in the film For Richer or Poorer, in which a husband and wife running from the IRS, find themselves in ‘Amish country’. While attempting to fit in with the local community the Amish find out who they truly. To avoid confrontation they then ‘shun’ the visitors., turning their backs to them in silence.
