The Asia Future Internet Forum (AsiaFI) 2008, led by Yong-Jin Park from Hanyang University, emphasizes the pressing challenges and opportunities in shaping the future of the Internet. As the number of global internet users and devices skyrockets, issues such as security, reliability, and performance demand innovative solutions. With initiatives from the USA, Europe, Japan, and Korea, AsiaFI aims to coordinate research and development to ensure a robust, scalable next-generation Internet. The forum highlights collaborative efforts to address these challenges through education, events, and global testbeds.

Outline • Challenges for Future Internet • Activities • USA • Europe • Japan • Korea • Asia: AsiaFI • International
Future Internet • The Internet is a tremendous success, but… • Internet of 10 or 15 years later • The Network of the Future • Internet of Things • Internet of Service • Internet of Security • Internet of 3D Media • Enabling the Future Networked Society
Challenges (1/3) • Scale & Diversity • The globe is becoming networked • Huge scale: • 542 M Internet hosts (2008.1) (originally hundreds of hosts were expected) • 1.3 B Internet users (2007.12) • 3.3 B mobile phones (2007.12) • Diverse networking: BAN,HAN, ubiquitous/sensor networking • Trillions of nodes • Diverse wireless networks : Bluetooth/Zigbee/WiFi/WiMax/WiMedia/W-CDMA/4G
Challenges (2/3) • Security (Not required in the original Internet) • Viruses • DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) Attack • Loss caused by DDOS was more than $ 1B (2005) • Addressing security comes at a significant cost • Estimated $50-100B spent worldwide on security in 2004 • Spam mails • 95% of the whole emails • Reliability • e-Commerce increasingly depends on fragile Internet
Challenges (3/3) • Performance • Scientists have significant bandwidth requirements • Each science community desires its own wavelength(s) in fibers
Functions have been much more stacked. Layers have been more & more inserted. It’s time to build a new Internet from scratch : Clean slate design! AKARI Conceptual Design, NICT 2007.4
