  2. General Information • Name of country- Peru • Capital city- Lima • Major languages spoken in Peru- Spanish, Quechua, Aymara, and some minor Amazonian languages • Peru is in Western South America, South of Colombia and Ecuador, West of Brazil and Bolivia, and North of Chile

  3. Lima • Capital and largest city in Peru • Peru’s economic center • Has oil refining and diversified manufacturing industries • Second oldest capital city in South America • Founded by Francisco Pizarro

  4. History of Peru • Discovered July 28, 1821 • Famous people- President Jose Luis Bustamente y Rivero (1945), General Manuel A. Odria took over (1948), General Francisco Morales Bermudez took over and promised to restore civilian government(1975), Belaunde Terry (May 18, 1980), President OllantaHumala (2011), and Prime Minister Oscar Valdez (2011)

Some Major Events in Peru’s History • 1980-2000, wars between rebel groups and the government 69,000 people were killed • 1993, a new constitution was approved • August 2007, and 8.0 magnitude earthquake hit 95 miles southeast of Lima • April 9, 2012 the Shining Path rebels kidnapped 42 Peruvian workers

  6. Independence • Peru was conquered then proclaimed independence and fought revolutions • Peru lost The War of the Pacific to Chile, but still proclaimed its independence

  7. Peru’s Geography • Major land forms- Peru is divided by the Andes Mountains • To the west is the coastline which is mostly arid • The mountain area has plateaus and deep valleys in the middle • Past the mountains in the east is the heavily forested slope leading to the Amazonian Plains

  9. Peru’s Geography • Major cities- • Lima (capital) has 7,870,000 people • Arequipa has 904,000 people • Trujillo has 820,000 people • Chiclayo has 634,000 people

  10. Culture • Clothing- • Traditional dresses, skirts, tunics, blankets, and Ponchos with geometrical patterns and vibrant colors are worn by Peruvian people • Alpacas are native to Peru, and some Peruvian clothes are made from Alpaca wool

  11. Culture • Holidays- • Peru has hundreds of festivals and holidays each year • Major holidays celebrated specifically in Peru

  12. Epiphany • Celebrated on the last day of Christmas • There are processions, dancing, and feasting

  13. Fiestas Patrias • Celebrated on July 28th • A celebration of Peru’s independence from the Spanish Empire

  14. Culture • Music- • Peruvian music included wind instruments made from cane, mud, bone, horns, and metals • Also included percussion instruments for rhythm and tone • Major musical genres- huayno and marinera • Native folk music was also included in Peruvian music

  16. Culture • Government- • Peru’s government is a Constitutional Republic • Includes Chiefs of State and cabinet members • Main person in charge is the President

  17. Culture • Food- • Top 5 Peruvian foods: • Ceviche- raw fish marinated in citrus juice • Cuy- guinea pig meat • Causa- a casserole layered with avocados and potatoes • LomoSaltado- beef and vegetable stir fry • Aji de Gallina- a stew made with chicken and peppers

  18. Economy • Exports- • Peruvians export 35.56 billion dollars each year • Copper, gold, zinc, tin, iron ore, petroleum, natural gas, coffee, potatoes, vegetables, fruit, clothes, and fish

  19. Economy • Manufacturing- • Most of Peru’s manufacturing is done in textiles • Mining, fishing, and agriculture also contribute to Peru’s manufacturing

  20. Economy • Land use (farming and agriculture)- • Most of the land in Peru is used for growing vegetables, coffee, cocoa, cotton, sugarcane, rice, potatoes, fruits, and grains

  21. Economy • Peruvian occupations- • The majority of Peruvian people are farmers for a living • If not farmers, shop owners or gold miners

  22. Economy • Peruvian money compared to U.S. dollars • Nuevo Sol is Peruvian money • A United States dollar has 100 cents and a Nuevo Sol has 100 centimos • One U.S. dollar equals two Nuevo Sol and 68 centimos

  23. Climate • Weather in Peru is unpredictable • There are two seasons- wet and dry • Weather patterns change often because Peru is so geographically diverse

  24. Climate • Rainfall in Peru- • Average rainfall in one year is 53 cm

  25. Climate • Temperatures- • Average daytime temperature in Peru is 85-90 degrees Fahrenheit • Nights cool down to 68 degrees Fahrenheit • January-March clear skies with humid air • June-October is the dry season

  26. Climate • Problems or natural disasters- • Only threat is strong earthquakes in Southern Peru

  27. Interesting facts about Peru • Population of Peru is 29,248,943 people • Life expectancy of Peruvians is 72.47 years old

More Interesting Facts • The flag of Peru- • Became the official flag on February 25, 1825 • Has 3 equal parts (vertical bands of red, white, and red again) • The middle section is designed by Jose Gregorio Paredes , called Coat of Arms • The picture is a shield with a llama-like animal, the national tree of Peru, a yellow cornucopia filled with gold coins, and a green wreath with branches that have red berries and ribbons

Interesting Facts (continued) • A plane ticket to Peru costs $927 • A hotel in Peru costs about $100 • Peru has many different types of transportation including railways, highways, waterways, ports, harbors, and airports • Peru is a relatively safe country because it is not poor and it is secure
