  9. New England Colonies • The New England colonies had small farms and ship building. • Decisions were made in Town hall meetings where each member had a say in outcome.

  10. Middle Colonies • The Middle colonies had some farming and later on factories.

  11. Southern Colonies • Were agricultural with large plantations, originally producing tobacco but later on growing cotton. • Slaves worked on the plantations

Please summarize term in your notes after discussion • ½ of 2/3rds of all immigrants to Colonial America arrived as indentured servants. • Employers paid for journey, room, and board • Labor shortages in America and joblessness in Europe made this an attractive job. • Criminals could become servants instead of dead • People could serve off their debts in the colonies • *** At times, as many as 75% of the population of some colonies were under terms of indenture.

Indentured servants continued • Due to poor living conditions, hard labor, and difficulties adjusting to new climates and native diseases, many servants did not live to see their freedom • Since they often spoke English and were white, runaway servants were more difficult to recapture than black slaves. • I.S. often fled and started life in different colony • I.S. replaced by slavery
