  1. The pronouns who and whom are sometimes confusing to students. We know that who is used as a subject, and whom is used as an object. Following these steps will help you to decide which form to use.

  2. ex:   The man (who, whom) she thought was perfect jilted her. • a. Isolate the clause which contains who or whom. •     (who, whom) was perfect

  3. b. Substitute the word he for who and him for whom. • he was perfect  or  him was perfect

  4.  c. Since he was perfect makes sense, you would use who.

  5. 1. (Who, Whom) should I call in case of emergency? • d. Sometimes you will have to rearrange the clause into normal word order as in #1. • ex:   I should call (who, whom).... •     I should call him.....thus, whom is correct in the first sentence.

  7. Each of the boys is speaking to (whoever, whomever) passes the house. • One of the men (who,whom) we met is Joe’s uncle. • A girl (who,whom) Jack and I like spoke to us today.

  8. Ask (whoever,whomever) you meet to help you look for Sam. • He is a person (who,whom) is always late • One of the boys (who,whom) we know is very tall.
