How do you think lobbyists affect the total amount of natural energy resources used in the United States? Objectives: 8.P.2.1/2.2 TSWU the positive and negative aspects of different energy resources and the consequences of the depletion of nonrenewable energy resources. Essential Question: What are the positive and negative aspects of different types of energy resources.

Objectives: 8.P.2.1/2.2 -TSWU the different types of natural energy resources. Essential Question: -Which energy resource is the most efficient and causes the least amount of pollution in the environment?

Lobbyists are hired and paid by special interest groups, companies, nonprofits and even school districts to exert influence over elected officials at all levels of government. Why do lobbyists play an important role for our government? President Donald Trump nominatedScott Pruitt, the attorney general of the oil and gas-intensive state of Oklahoma, to head the Environmental Protection Agency. Is this a good or bad decision? Why?

  8. What does it mean to lobby for something?… DQ: If you were on the student council, how would you realistically argue to get less school days? Write your argument. The act of attempting to influence decisions made by officials in the government. They seek to persuade members of the government. Think about companies that would pay lobbyists to help influence government officials. ???BUT WHY???

What do lobbyists do? • WHAT DOES A LOBBYIST DO? • Researching – legislation or regulatory proposals • Monitoring – staying informed of and effectively reporting on developments and governmental issues • Attending hearings – • Working with Coalitions – developing and coordinating with grassroots efforts • Educating – informing officials and the public

What do lobbyists do? • help you develop an effective policy strategy, • proactively keep you apprised of any new legislation that may impact your organization, • use the latest in communication technology to connect you to government policy makers and the public, • assist you with drafting new legislation, • develop strategies to enact new laws and change existing laws, and • address issues in compliance for international and federal regulations. • In short, a good lobbyist will be your connection to government and look out for your interests.

Today, you will research what your energy source has the BEST to offer. • Captain: 1 person leads tech research (all contribute) • Recorder: All students records information on guided notes • Researcher: All students must research • Presenter: 1 person presents (lobbies) PERSUASIVELY! • Attacker: 1 person challenges other industry competitors. Today, your group will research the advantages of your energy resourceand the disadvantages of your competitors’ resources. Monday/Tuesday we lobby for our natural energy resource & VOTE!

This is your defense slide. • Slide 6: Two minute or less video clip with a 2-3 sentence summary written.
