  2. Melting • Melting Point-when a solid substance turns to liquid.

  3. Boiling • When a liquid receives enough heat to change to a gas. • Water boils at 212 degrees F.

  4. Native Americans and Science??? • Native Americans originally taught the settlers how to tap maple trees for the sap in order to make maple syrup.

  5. The Maple Tree • The maple tree is a common tree in the deciduous forest, and most all the foods the early colonists cooked used ingredients that could be found in their environment.

  6. Maple Syrup • Maple syrup was used many different ways other than pouring over pancakes. One favorite way was to make candy. • Colonists would get together in the spring and collect sap to make the candy.
