  2. Overview for Grades 2 - 3 • SOL’s for Science and Scientific Investigations, Reasoning and Logic • Utilization of Resources for the Teaching of these SOL’s • Directed Activity • Local Resources • Questions and Answers

  3. Grade 2 SOL’s Life Processes 2.4 The student will investigate and understand that plants and animals undergo a series of orderly changes in their life cycles. Key concepts include • some animals (frogs and butterflies) undergo distinct stages during their lives, while others generally resemble their parents; and • flowering plants undergo many changes, from the formation of the flower to the development of the fruit. Living Systems 2.5 The student will investigate and understand that living things are part of a system. Key concepts include • living organisms are interdependent with their living and nonliving surroundings; and • habitats change over time due to many influences.

  4. Grade 2 SOL’s (Continued) Earth Patterns, Cycles, and Change 2.7 The student will investigate and understand that weather and seasonal changes affect plants, animals, and their surroundings. Key concepts include • effects on growth and behavior of living things (migration, hibernation, camouflage, adaptation, dormancy); and • weathering and erosion of the land surface.

  5. Grade 3 SOL’s Life Processes 3.4 The student will investigate and understand that behavioral and physical adaptations allow animals to respond to life needs. Key concepts include • methods of gathering and storing food, finding shelter, defending themselves, and rearing young; and • hibernation, migration, camouflage, mimicry, instinct, and learned behavior.

  6. Grade 3 SOL’s (Continued) Resources 3.10 The student will investigate and understand that natural events and human influences can affect the survival of species. Key concepts include • the interdependency of plants and animals; • the effects of human activity on the quality of air, water, and habitat; • the effects of fire, flood, disease, and erosion on organisms; and • conservation and resource renewal

  7. Grade 3 SOL’s (Continued) Living Systems 3.5 The student will investigate and understand relationships among organisms in aquatic and terrestrial food chains. Key concepts include • producer, consumer, decomposer; • herbivore, carnivore, omnivore; and • predator and prey. 3.6 The student will investigate and understand that environments support a diversity of plants and animals that share limited resources. Key concepts include • water-related environments (pond, marshland, swamp, stream, river, and ocean environments); • dry-land environments (desert, grassland, rain forest, and forest environments); and • population and community.

Approaches to Utilizing Resources and Resource Facilitator • Select SOL’s or materials you find “difficult” or require materials you may not possess. • Check local resources and facilitators (Remember they WANT TO HELP YOU!) Then check for other resources • Contact the resource facilitator • Set up an appointment to talk with the local resource facilitator or contact • Provide the educational groundwork for the resource or facilitator’s visit. (or field trip) • Do an educational follow-up • Don’t forget to thank the facilitator.

  9. Guided Activity Marsh Birds Questions: • What kind of habitat is this? • How many different kinds of birds are present? Can you identify them? • What do you think the birds are doing? • Identify the producers and consumers in this picture • How are these birds adapted to this environment? How well are they camouflaged? • Develop one question about this habitat?
