  2. Modern coins of India can be classified into two groups, namely, Anna series and Decimal coinage. • Decimal coinage was introduced in 1957 and coins issued from 1950 to 1957 belonged to the Anna series. Let’s look at a few examples from both these categories of coins of modern India.

  3. This square-shaped 1/2 Anna coin from the Anna Series issued by Government of India was struck on 2.85 grams Copper-Nickel in 1954 at Calcutta Mint. • The obverse of these modern Indian coins features the text GOVERNMENT OF INDIA around National Emblem and a Star below the emblem.

  4. This scalloped 1 Anna coin from Anna Series was struck by GOI in 3.55 grams of Copper-Nickel in the year 1950 featuring Zebu the Bull on one side and National emblem on the other. • The Diamond-shaped mint mark on these modern coins of india, indicate that they were struck at Bombay Mint.

  5. This scalloped 10 paise aluminium coin from the decimal coinage series weighed 2.3 grams and was struck in 1974 at Kolkata mint. • The reverse design of these modern coins of India were based on a Family Planning Programme that was introduced by the Government at that time to control population so that there is food for all.

  6. These square shaped Modern Coins of India bore the denomination 5 Paise, was struck in aluminium and belonged to the Decimal Coinage series. It was issued in 1979 at Hyderabad as it features the Star Mint Mark. • The reverse design of these modern Indian coins celebrates “The Year of Child” and features the text BACHCHE KI MUSKAN RASHTRA KI SHAAN in Devanagari and HAPPY CHILD NATIONS PRIDE.
