REMARKS/SKETCHES G. 7 ½” • PYROTECHNIC AMMUNITION • SAFETY PRECAUTIONS • Pyrotechnic material shall always be kept by it self in regular pyrotechnic storage spaces, if such are provided, or in pyrotechnic lockers on upper decks. In using it only a minimum amount shall be exposed. • HAZARDS • Pyrotechnic ammunition is more subject to deterioration than some other types of ammunition, and some types are liable to spontaneous ignition if exposed to moisture, high temperatures, rough handling. Certain types of rockets have a box of matches or a match igniter assembled along with the round; therefore to prevent accidental ignition it is important that such articles be packed and stored so that they cannont rub against each other or any other object. • Pyrotechnic ammunition is in genral a fire hazard and forms a very hot fire, difficult to extinguish. Most all types furnish their own oxygen upon combustion, but large volumes of water may serve to cool materials, or at least adjacent materials, below the ignition temperature. • Keep pyrotechnic material cool, dry storage and ensure careful handling procedures. Ensure protection against shocks and from continual movement due to the roll of the ship. • Pyrotechnic ammunition found in a deteriorated, damp, or damaged condition shall be turned in to an ammunition depot at the first opportunity for replacement. 5” White sign letters will be red and 2” in height SECTION III. Keep all safety devices in good order at all times. 2. Never handle ammunition while taking fuel aboard, Except in emergencies. 3. Handle ammunition as little as possible and always carefully. If any pyrotechnic is dropped more than one foot, or is dented or damaged in any way, set it aside carefully and report it toe the Weapons Officer. 4. Keep all ammunition away from high temperatures if accidently exposed, follow current NAVSEASYSCOM instructions. 6. Never change ordnance equipment or take apart ammunition, in any way, withotu specific NAVSEASYSCOM instructions. ALL AMMUNITION IS DANGEROUS - ALWAYS BE CAREFUL 6. Keep pyrotechnic lockers clean and dry at all times. stow only pyrotechnic ammunition, containers and authorized locker equipment in lockers. 7. Keep naked lights, matches and all other possible sources of flame, heat or sparks, and all oil, oily rags. cleaning gear and iron or steel tools out of lockers and away from areas where pyrotechnic ammunition is being carried or stored. 8. No work shall be done in pyrotechnic stowage or in the compartments adjacent therto that will cause high temperatures or intense localheat until all explosives have been removed to a safe stowage. 9. Always keep all pyrotechnic ammunition by itself in in regular pyrotechnic storage spaces or in pyrotechnic lockers on upper decks. Disperse stowage of pyrotechnic ammunition, keeping it separated by type, color and lot number. Remove from lockers or storage spaces only ammunition immediately needed for firing. 10. Keep covers of switches, circuit breakers, etc. Closed while pyrotechnic ammunition is exposed nearby. 11. No person shall undertake any repair or alteration in a magazine or handling room except by authority of the Commanding Officer and in the presence of the Weapons Officer and or the assistant designated by him. only rated electricians or fire controlmen will work on the electrical installation in a magazine or handling room. this includes the simplest kind of work such as the renewal of a lamp. Electricians, before starting work, must block sides of the line and tag the open switch with a MAGAZINE DANGER TAG. 12. Only trained personnel equipped with protective clothing and masks may handle chemical ammunition. 13. If smoke-making devices have misfired or been in the water, do not take them on board ship or inside buildings. 14. Pyrotechnic ammunition is less stable than other ammunition – handle it gently. Keep it cool and dry and protected form shock and continual movement. Nitrate mixes are fairly stable, but chlorate and red phosphorous miss are very sensitive. Mixes containing chlorite and sulphur may ignite spontaneously, while mixes con- taining powdered aluminum or magnesium my explode in a fire. 15. Burning pyrotechnic ammunition is difficult to extinguish. Large volumes of water will help to cool the burning ammunition and nearby materials below the ignition temperature. 16. The command SILENCE is an emergency order stop all movement and noise and await orders. It is the duty of any person present to give this command immediately upon detecting present or threatened danger. 17. In case of fire in magazines. Open or have opened the sprinkling and or flooding valves. GIVE THE ALARM. 18. Pyrotechnic ammunition is more subject to deterioration than other ammunition, and likely to ignite spontaneously if subjected to moisture, high temperature or rough handling. Careful handling is required at all times. DO NOT PAINT OVER THIS SIGN White sign letters will be red, sign will be 7 ½” wide by 9” tall. SECTION III. AUTHENTICATION H. HULL NUMBER F. 2K 2L 2P CONTINUATION FOR X SECTION 11. REMARKS/SKETCHES G. .50 CAL M2 HB MG MISFIRE PROCEDURES General Comments When a misfire occurs in a .50-caliber machine gun, you have approximately 10 seconds after loading in which to clear the round from a hot gun. If a cook-off occurs in this gun with the bolt closed, the round will fire in a normal manner. Cook-off can occur any time between 10 seconds and 5 minutes after the round is loaded Hot Gun M2HB and M2HB modified: firing 200 or more rounds in less than 2 minutes. Immediate Action Misfire Procedures a. When a misfire occurs, proceed as follows: 1. Ensure gun is pointed to a safe line of fire. 2. Clear all unnecessary personnel from vicinity of the gun. 3. Ensure gun safety is set to “fire” position. 4. Determine if bolt is partially open or fully closed Bolt Partially Open a. If bolt is partially open, proceed as follows: 1. Draw bolt fully to the rear and release the charging handle. 2. If a round or spent case is ejected, attempt to fire. If round fires, the immediate action was successful. No further steps are required. 3. If the weapon does not fire, proceed with Bolt Fully Closed a. Determine if weapon is a hot gun or cold gun, and proceed with Wait 3 seconds after last attempt to fire before opening bolt to protect against hangfire hazards. Hot Gun Procedure In a hot gun, the possibility of a propelling charge cook-off is always present. Wait 3 seconds after last attempt to fire before opening bolt to protect against hangfire hazards. Never open the cover of a hot gun. An open cover cook-off could occur and result in serious injury or death. Never remove the back plate assembly from a weapon until the chamber has been cleared. a. If gun is a hot gun, proceed as follows: 1. Wait 3 seconds to allow for a hangfire and charge weapon. 2. If you are unable to charge the weapon, proceed with Step 5 or 6 as appropriate. Inspect for ruptured cartridge case when the weapon has cooled sufficiently. 3. If the weapon charges normally and a round or spent case is ejected, attempt to fire. If the weapon fires, the immediate action was successful and no further steps are required. 4. If weapon does not fire, ensure that the bolt is in the forward position. 5. Place the weapon in single-shot mode by turning the buffer tube sleeve to the right to free the bolt latch release. 6. Evacuate all personnel from the area for 15 minutes. 7. Follow cold gun procedure. Cold Gun Procedure a. If gun is a cold gun, proceed as follows: 1. If bolt is fully closed, wait 3 seconds to allow for a hangfire and then charge gun. 2. If a round or spent case is ejected, attempt to fire, if round fires, the immediate action was successful and no further steps are required. 3. If the weapon does not fire, wait 3 seconds. 4. Raise cover and remove ammunition belt. Charge the weapon. 5. If a round or spent case ejects, weapon will be clear. 6. Retract bolt and inspect the chamber and t-slot for rounds, spent or ruptured cases. 7. Remove manually to clear weapon. Sign will be white with black letters and 8 1/2” x 11” SECTION III.
