  6. CARPOOLEnter Gate 9 - West Alabama (only gate open on South Campus during school day)

  7. Turning into Gate 9 Before 7:45 A.M. – Left or Right turn from West Alabama into Gate 9 permitted 7:45 – 8:00 A.M. – Right Turn Only After 2:50 P.M. – Right Turn Only ☺ Carpool Friendly ☺

  8. Stay in right-hand lane.This is called the “chute.”Middle School carpool is in the left-hand lane.

  9. Carpool “Curb” * Do not stop along the curb until all cars have pulled up as far as possible (as close as to the blue crosswalk in front of VST). * Do not unload along the iron rail. * Display your name and carpool number on passenger side windshield or visor. * Drivers must remain in their cars. * Students must load/unload from the curbside of the vehicle. * Exit onto Buffalo Speedway (may turn left or right). * No cell phones.

  10. Carpool … • Students may enter or exit cars without adult assistance. • Parking on the carpool lane is available from 8:05 A.M. until 2:30 P.M. • K-3 students must be picked up on the LS carpool lane. • Please explain drop-off and pick-up procedures to anyone who is driving your child.

  11. Morning Drop-off • Students arriving before 7:45 A.M. must go to the cafeteria. The cafeteria is supervised by a teacher from 7:15-7:45 A.M. *More info to come about 1st day of school procedures in August orientation* • Carpool Lane Lower School staff greets students 7:45-8:00 A.M. Campus Ambassador on lane at 7:15 A.M. • Students who arrive after 8:00 A.M. are considered tardy and must check in at the LS office.

Afternoon Dismissal: • Lower School carpool line for: Private car pick-up St. Luke’s After-School Care van pick-up • Parents may meet children outside the classroom door and take them to the library or playground. • Children may not meet the adult at the tree, on the track, or on the playground. • Study Hall (LS Cafeteria) 3:15 – 3:40 P.M (for older students) • Kindergarten: early dismissal at 12 P.M. (August 19 - 22)

General Parking Tips: During School Day: -Park along LS carpool lane curb (8:05 A.M.-2:30 P.M.). -Park in right-hand lane of carpool chute. -Park in Visitor Parking spots in front of MS and Fine Arts Bldg. Do not park in St. John the Divine Church lot. After 3:00 P.M. : Parents may park in “Senior Lot” – Gate 12 on Buffalo Speedway. “Reserved” faculty parking is no longer in effect after 3 P.M. in any of the lots.

  14. Uniforms Outerwear sold in SJS Bookstore See Uniform Regulations (New Family link) PLEASE label all clothing. Lost and Found in LS Office and Gym Used Uniform Sales

  15. School Supplies St. John’s provides all classroom supplies for students entering Kindergarten through Class Five. Kindergarten: SJS bookbags with monogram provided. Students may not bring backpacks. Classes 1-5: Students bring backpack of choice. K-12 House System: Students receive “house” t-shirt. SJS Bookstore: located in Upper School – Science Bldg (S105)

Lunchroom • Kindergarten - Class 3 options: hot lunch plate or sandwich substitution & milk/water • Monthly menu posted on the website - Vegetarian (V) option every day • Lunches brought from home: easy-to-open containers; unable to refrigerate or heat food • Lunches are charged to student accounts - no money exchange • Peanut-free table • Lunch visits - Not first few weeks; teachers will let parents know • We kindly request parents not bring food for other students at the table and are mindful of the distraction caused by bringing fast food and other treats to your children.

In the Fall… • Lower School Parents’ Night Thurs., Sept 4 (7 P.M. – optional specialists’ open house 6:30 P.M.) • Book Fair Family Night Wed., Oct. 1 • SJS vs. Kinkaid Game and Dinner at Rice Stadium Fri., Oct. 24 (Dinner 5-7 P.M. & Game 7 P.M.) • Lower School Fun Day Sat., Oct. 25 (1 - 3 P.M.)

  23. Ideas for summer • Carve out daily time for reading • Read aloud chapter books • Build quiet reading time into your schedule, ideally the whole family at the same time • Read a wide variety of genres • HASLIN list – great resource for titles

  24. It’s always right to write! • Summer journal with pictures and text • Back and forth journal between you and your child • Authentic letters or postcards to grandparents and special friends • Help create shopping and packing lists • Allow and celebrate developmental spelling

  25. Make math a part of life • Anytime you are using money • Telling time throughout the day • Games such as dominoes, card games, any games using numbers that build number sense • Ten-ness – all the ways to make 10
