  3. French settlers made places like St. Louis and Ste. Genevieve very different from English settlements on the other side of the Mississippi River. Most French settlers in Missouri were not actually from France, but from French Canada. English frontier families usually lived on isolated farms, far away from each other. The French in Missouri did not live this way. They lived in villages like they had in Canada or France. A village was better in many ways. People in a village could more easily defend themselves against Indian attacks. People could work together to farm. The French were very faithful to their Catholic Church, and by living closer together, each family could help support a priest and a church. There was another important reason the French liked village life. English visitors often remarked on how much the French loved to hold dances and dinners. Many families owned fiddles, and the French even brought pianos to Missouri. They loved to hold festivals. Questions: Where did most French settlers in Missouri come from? What made French settlements different from English settlements?

  4. 1. List some examples of ideas the French borrowed from the Indians. 2. List some things from the French the Indians traded for. 2. How did the fur trade cause Indian tribes to fight?
