Our Main Goals: • We will challenge all children to the best of our ability. • We will help your child whenever help is needed. • We will encourage them to be independent workers. • We will strive to create life long learners.
Critical Areas in Math: 3rd Grade • Developing an understanding of multiplication and division strategies • Furthering the understanding of place value and numerical operations • Developing an understanding of fractions, especially unit fractions with a numerator of 1 • Describing and analyzing two-dimensional shapes • Developing a variety of strategies for problem solving
Math • Students will use math notebooks • We reinforce number sense with daily math facts practice • We will emphasize correct mathematical terminology • There is a big emphasis on problem solving • We will teach multiple strategies for problem solving. • We will cover fewer topics, but each topic will be covered more in depth.
Math Facts • Third graders will fluently multiply and divide within 100 (THEY MUST MEMORIZE ALL OF THEIR FACTS FROM 0 TO 10)
Reading • Selected Reading in Fiction and Nonfiction Texts in Harcourt Journeys • Literature studies • Daily 5 rotations and small groups • Read to Self • Read with a partner • Listen to literature • Writing • Word Work • Teacher • Nightly reading (20 minutes minimum) • We encourage all students to read chapter books at their level!
Students may take one library book home but must bring it back on library days. The other book stays here for reading. Students visit the library only once every six school days. Students will not be able to check out books if they have any overdue books or outstanding fees. Library Check-Out
Writing & Grammar • Writing Projects: expository, opinion and narrative • Write From the Beginning (Thinking Maps) • Writing process • Letter Writing • Grammar • Cursive and legibility
Spelling • Test on Friday • Above level reading does above level spelling • Homework practice – 2 sided worksheet • Additional practice at home to make sure your student can spell assigned words.
Social Studies • National symbols • Explorers • Government • Maps and Geography skills • Biographies • Economics • Character Counts
Homework20-30 minutes per night • Weekly homework: Friday – Friday • All skills will be review • We assume that parents are checking and helping with homework. • Reading: 20 minutes per night for at least 4 nights a week (at least 80 min. per week) • Consists of: Reading page, spelling page, writing assignment, and math page (all double sided) • The red folder should always be in backpacks in order to take home papers that must go home during the week. • If it gets to be too much, then please sign it showing that you’ve given it enough time. We’ll understand.
Grading • Students receive letter grades based on the following percentages: • 90-100% A • 80-89% B • 70-79% C • 60-69% D • Chandler is going paperless! We are NOT going to send home paper progress reports or report cards. Grades will be available online. Be sure to activate your account at the beginning of the school year.

Field Trips Chandler Museum and The Boyce Thompson Arboretum (No dates are set yet)
Birthdays • No home baked goods are allowed. It is a district policy. • We will do a song and pass out treats during the last 10 minutes of the day. • Please bring individual treats that are ALL ALIKE (NOT half vanilla and half chocolate).
Snack • Healthy snack • Water only in the classroom • Please add money to your child’s lunch account if you want them to buy a hot lunch
Supplies • The recommended supplies are due on Monday. It really helps us get the kids organized from the very first day! • Please have your child bring a “Read to Self” book on Monday, too!
Volunteering • Please notify us through e-mail if your are interested in volunteering. • Art Masterpiece • PTO
