  2. Studying is Complex • “Study” is a word thrown around frequently, but means focusing on information in one particular content area. Some students are able to self-regulate their studying habits because of a high motivation level. However, finding the motivation to study can be difficult for students.

  3. Studying Includes Learning Strategies • Studying strategies must be taught so students understand the purpose and process of studying. Studying can comprise of: • Questioning- students ask themselves questions after reading or evaluating notes • Note Organization- graphs, charts and diagrams can help assemble notes visibly • Writing- study guides, summaries, note cards, journals, essays can all contribute to study tools • Mnemonic Devices- acronyms, analogies, or images can help students identify “tricks” to understand material • Collaborative Strategy- working in groups and having notes read back and forth can benefit students

  4. Studying Includes Taking Tests • Through enforcing tests, teachers are having tests act as study techniques. Test preparation is the act of studying, and has students review notes from class. Teachers should explain test formats and how students should approach tests. Teachers should also go over tests after they have been concluded so that students understand the material made and missed.

  5. Studying Includes Managing Resources • Studying techniques can be taught but it is up to the student to ensure they are organize and using resources appropriately. Some ways to manage resources go as follow: • Maintain a routine. • Create a productive environment. • Complete tasks in an efficient order. • Complete tasks on schedule. • Review information at regular intervals. • Seek help when needed. • Set goals. • Get along with each other.

  6. Important Principles of Instruction Apply to Studying • Studying is very complex and it cannot be assumed that students automatically understand the proper way to study or what to study. • While teaching, teachers should spend time reviewing content being taught and what should be highlighted. Also, help establish acronyms or study tips for as much information as possible. • Providing explicit instruction is critical to note-taking and for students to understand what is being taught. Certain strategies must be described along with modeling, collaborating, and guiding students through the strategy.
