    4. Introductions Iowa Testing Program Cathy Welch Stephen Dunbar David Henkhaus Computerized Assessments and Learning (CAL) Linette McJunkin Mark Kalusha

    5. IARA Commitment to Iowa schools Recognition of the importance of the Iowa Algebra Readiness Assessment and the need for additional assessments Recognition of the need for valid, reliable and timely information Opportunity to partner with Computerized Assessments and Learning (CAL)

    6. CAL Reach Spring 2003 First implementation in Kansas (n = 2850) To date, over 13 million standardized assessments in reading, mathematics, writing, science and social studies at grade 3 through high school administered for all students in: Alaska Idaho Kansas Nebraska Oklahoma South Carolina Washington ...and IOWA!

    7. General Information Algebra: Grades 5 through 8 60 multiple-choice questions; metrics provided in reports: 40 minutes Scores shown on-screen to students after completion of test Student reports available to administrators Visual Accommodations available

    8. Getting Started Iowa CAL Testing Web site Address: http://ia.caltesting.org

    9. Before Testing All students should be administered the Student Tutorial and Practice Test. Review the communication plan with all DSAs, SAs, and TAs. Print Test Session Tickets and Summary Page. Review the Test Administration Manual prior to testing.

    10. Student Tutorials & Practice Tests For best results, students should take the Tutorials and Practice test prior to taking the IARA test. The Student Tutorials and Practice Tests can be accessed through the test engine. The Student Tutorials can also be accessed from http://ia.caltesting.org. It is recommended that administrators (DTAs, STAs, and TAs) take the Student Tutorials and Practice Tests.

    11. Administer the Test Inform the students that the clock will start after they read the instructions and when they press the Start Test button. The student should be given a blank piece of paper and pencil. Additional time can be given as determined by the test administrator after 40 minute timer expires. A student may pause his/her test for up to 15 minutes (example emergency bathroom break).

    12. Student Report

    13. Testing Interruptions Student is kicked out of system: If a student is "kicked out" of the system due to computer failure or lost connection, have the student try logging into the same computer or a computer not currently being tested on. Student responses will be saved in the event of an interruption. Resumes at first question Hit next to advance through items. To verify, check the Review screen

    21. Lab Configuration

    22. Lab Configuration

    23. Which Set Up Should Your School Use? Key elements: Reliability of Internet connectivity Bandwidth available Number of simultaneous testers With a reliable T1 connection a non-LCS setup can support up to 150 simultaneous testers. But if you expect to test more than 150 simultaneous users with at T1 connection or if you have an unreliable Internet connection, the LCS is strongly recommended. When in doubt, verify installation and infrastructure during administration of practice tests.

    24. Local Caching Software LCS: Easy installation, configuration and maintenance An instance of the LCS can support up to 1000 simultaneous testers If you need to support more, you can set up multiple instances of the LCS LCS allows students to continue testing in the event of connectivity interruptions Automatic caching (and purging) of test data Automatic uploading of test responses Students test responses are continuously saved Communication between workstations and LCS is through HTTP(S) protocol LCS Monitoring Tool interface available for each LCS

    25. LCS Monitoring Tool

    26. School Capacity Calculator Because of the LCS technology, Internet connectivity is not the primary factor when determining online testing capacity. Primary factors: Number of computers available for testing in your school. Number of days available/allowed for testing. Number of Test Sessions Available per Day

    27. Compute your school testing capacity For example, if a school has 100 computers available for testing, can schedule 4 test administrations per day, and has 25 days available for testing their school testing capacity will be: School Capacity Calculator

    28. Testing Software Installation Installation http://ia.caltesting.org Windows, Mac and Linux Installers In most circumstances the default installation will be sufficient to start testing CAL Configuration. Preferences Program Proxy settings (automatic detection) Automatic updates Local Caching Software Troubleshoot Your settings are stored within the installation directory: C:\Program Files\Iowa Testing Programs (Windows) /Applications/Iowa Testing Programs (Mac)

    29. LCS Installation Download LCS from http://ia.caltesting.org Windows, Mac, Linux LCS Manager. LCS Port Configuration: default port 8100 Proxy setting Troubleshoot Your settings are stored within the installation directory under \conf\lcs.properties Log file: \log\lcs.log within the installation directory
