  2. HISTORY • 921 feet and the structure is slightly over 71 feet in height • 5-story Pentagon building has 5 concentric rings connected by 10 spoke-like corridors ranging out from the inner • The Chief of Construction Division under the U.S. Army Quartermaster General in 1941 was Brigadier General Brehon B. Somervell. • He became the prime planner for what would eventually be the War Department’s massive home. As an alternative to temporary facilities proposals in 1941, Brig. Gen. Somervell and his associates took less than four days to develop plans for a mammoth three-story facility to house 40,000 people. • After the Under Secretary of War Robert P. Patterson, Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson, and President Franklin D. Roosevelt approved the proposal, Congress debated it during the summer of 1941. Estimating the total cost at $35 million, the War Department put forth several arguments for the new building. First, it would relieve crowding in other federal departments, since they could occupy space vacated by the War Department. Second, the government could save $3 million per year in rental fees for War Department offices. Third, the Navy could take over the Munitions Building, then occupied by the War Department, saving $22 million currently proposed for a new Navy Department Building. Fourth, some apartments occupied by the War Department could be released for private residential use, easing Washington DC’s critical housing shortage. Fifth, the consolidated structure would be more convenient for persons doing business with the department since they would not have to travel to several different buildings. And last, the War Department’s efficiency would increase between 20 and 40 percent.

  3. GEOMETRIC ANALYSIS • It’s a 5 story pentagon 5 concentric rings connected by 10 spoke-like corridors. The combined length of the corridors is 17 ½ miles long and the total gross floor is 6.5 million square feet long. The length of each of the five outer walls is 921 feet and the structure is slightly over 71 feet in height.
