Al Qaeda • headed by Saudi Osama bin Laden • goals of Al Qaeda: • renew Islamic Caliphate (unite Muslim world) – by force if necessary • remove all outside influences from Muslim states • physical removal of Westerners from Muslim states • ex. American military in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait (Iraqi invasion) • topple pro-Western/secular gov’ts, etc. • destroy influence of Muslims deemed “un-Muslim” • destroy Israel

Why Al Qaeda is different than any other organization accused of terrorism… • In history, most “terrorist” groups have been local/regional: • their fight involves a single nation or small region • they address issues that concern a specific group of people • for example: • Tamil Tigers (Sri Lanka) • Hamas (Palestine) • AumShinrikyo (Japan) • Reign of Terror (France)

  4. Why Al Qaeda is different than any other organization accused of terrorism… • Al Qaeda is a GLOBAL organization. • unites people from all over the world with similar beliefs • organizes various independent cells to work together as one • carries out attacks in multiple countries worldwide

  5. Why Al Qaeda is different than any other organization accused of terrorism… • Some say Al Qaeda’s popularity is linked to the negative effects of globalization on certain cultures. Ironically, Al Qaeda’s success is largely due to globalization. • uses global money exchanges/networks • uses global exchange of knowledge/education • uses traditional media (video tapes aired on news networks, pamphlets to advertise beliefs) • uses social media (blogs, Facebook, YouTube)
