Critical Facts • Each campus environment is unique • Each cadet’s background/foundation is unique • Large distance between schools is a strain on cadet/cadre travel and centralized logistic functions • Limited training time and money • CU is the main resource provider/supporter to our program • Cadets must balance academic/ROTC life • The BN’s LDAC performance and commission numbers are the evaluation metric used by BDE through CC, and in some ways the academic community as well

Obstacles to Cadet Success • Academics • Degree completed on time or delays known well in advance • Sufficient GPA for graduation and success • Swimming - must pass swim test/CWST • APFT, Height/Weight – must meet CC requirements • Personal life – stable or at least controlled • No conduct/history that will make the cadet a security risk • Able to handle the stress of life and Army life • Does not implode: seeks help before it is too late • Change of conviction • Medical issues – no DoDMERB disqualifiers

  5. Ends, Ways, and Means AIM What do we want to do? =What is our mission/endstate? (define the mission and endstates) What will it look like? =What conditions must we produce to achieve our aim? (discern the conditions to create each endstate) ENDS How will we do it? =What sequence of actions is most likely to produce the conditions? (task list arranged over time/space) WAYS What will we use? =How should our resources be applied to accomplish the sequence of actions? (personnel, budget, land, etc) What are the costs/risks in performing the sequence of actions? MEANS RISK

Conditions and Key TaskThe 2nd Lieutenant (1 of 5) • Commissioned officer strong in character • Conditions: • Meets all commissioning requirements • Intestinal fortitude to live the Army Values; shape the will of the unit, not become consumed by it • Able to subdue or conquer personal fears in order to accomplish any mission • Able to navigate the grey areas with discernment (moral compass) • Able to withstand the pressures of functioning in hostile, diverse, complex, and distributive operations • Key Task: • Recruit, develop, and retain quality prospects (SALs); meet contract and commission mission for each MSL

Conditions and Key TaskThe 2nd Lieutenant (2 of 5) • Commitment to the Nation and the Army in your heart • Conditions: • Believe in, committed to, and live the Army Values: Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity, and Personal Courage • A commitment to the Army Mission and a proactive and trustworthy work ethic • A commitment to introspection and the strengthening of their character • Key Task: • Cadre live the Army Values and treat cadets with dignity and respect

Conditions and Key TaskThe 2nd Lieutenant (3 of 5) • Firm foundation of knowledge to build toward your future • Conditions: • Meet all school degree graduation requirements • Solid working knowledge of TLPs and the fundamentals of the MDMP • Tactically sound and have basic background in history (civil and military) • Solid understanding and application of field craft • Basic understanding of Army structure, weapons, and equipment capabilities • Key Task: • Teach the MSL core curriculum and facilitate the Cadets’ understanding of the material

Conditions and Key TaskThe 2nd Lieutenant (4 of 5) • Bold, resolute, problem solvers, and agents of change • Conditions: • Skilled listener and communicator • Skilled assessor of situations, problem solver, and critical thinker • Ability to speak in front of people with conviction and confidence • Ability to build/work in teams and maintain control of emotions in stress • Ability to adapt to change and empathize with different people/cultures • Ability to speak and write effectively in military and academic environments • Key Task: • Mentor program and cadre counseling feedback to facilitate recognition of strengths and weaknesses and action to improve

Conditions and Key TaskThe 2nd Lieutenant (5 of 5) • Capable of completing BOLC II and III and arrive at your first unit capable of leading • Conditions: • Physical fitness to endure hardships and accomplish any mission • Ability to navigate during day and night and within small units • Ability to swim and conduct water operations confidently • Skilled in the fundamentals of Drill and Ceremony to move units • Able to lead the soldiers and small units of our AC/RC BCTs and Support BDEs • Mature and confident enough to listen to their subordinates • Flexible, adaptable, and smart enough to learn from all possible sources and experiences • Key Task: • Cadet mastery of the 401/402 core curriculum

MS I – III Endstates • MS III Endstate: • Commitment to the Commander’s endstate for a CU 2nd Lieutenant • Pass swimming test and CWST • On track for graduation and documented on 104-R • Graduate LDAC • Meet HT/WT/body fat standards • Pass APFT • Pass land navigation (day/night/written) • Earn a minimum rating of “Satisfactory” on each of the 16 leadership dimensions and area of Values on final eval • Complete at least 90% of training • Identified poor communicators (verbal/written) enrolled with tutor • MS II Endstate: • Commitment to contract and have an attitude to learn/succeed • Knowledge of TLP/OPORDs • (LTC endstates?) • Meet minimum contracting requirements • Contracted cadets pass APFT and meet HT/WT/body fat standards • Identified poor communicators (verbal/written) enrolled with tutor • MS I Endstate: • Basic military discipline/knowledge • Commitment to continue into MSL 201 • Contracted cadets pass APFT and meet HT/WT/body fat standards • Identified poor communicators (verbal/written) enrolled with tutor
