Explore the fascinating processes of reproduction, growth, and development in living organisms as detailed in Chapter 9 of "Where Life Comes From" by Shelby Jameson. From the concept of DNA containing traits to the diversity found in populations, learn about meiosis, mitosis, asexual and sexual reproduction, external and internal fertilization, animal development, and unique features of mammal offspring. Discover how zygotes evolve into embryos and the crucial role of the uterus and placenta in nurturing developing mammals. Thank you for delving into the wonders of life!

Reproduction, Growth, and Development Chapter 9 By: Shelby Jameson
Where Life Comes From • Spontaneous Generation • Idea that living things come from non-living things. • Your DNA contains the information needed to make a human with your characteristics or traits. • Living things reproduce and pass on exact copies of their DNA to offspring. • Reproduction in animals and plants usually involve two parents. • Diversity • Range of differences found among members of a population.
Reproduction • Meiosis • Each new cell divides again, gametes form by a division of the nucleus. • Mitosis • Each new cell has exact copy of the chromosomes that were in the parent cell. • Asexual reproduction=1 parent • Sexual reproduction=2 parents • External fertilization • Fertilized outside the female body • Internal fertilization • male places sperm inside female body causing fertilization.
Animal Development • New Animal begins as a zygote • Becomes an embryo which is made of a million different cells • Embryo eventually takes on different shapes and functions this is called cell differentiation.
Early stages look same as the adult. Incomplete Metamorphosis Early stages don’t look same as the adult.
Mammal Offspring • Produce few offspring • Take care of young for long periods of time • Most carry young inside their body. • Embryo is held and protected by the Uterus. • Placenta provides food & oxygen from mother to developing embryo. • Different Mammals have different gestation times depending on size.(Time till birth)
