Operation Honor Corps Operation Honor Corps is a project that supports military service members, families, and veterans by encouraging individuals and organizations to perform acts of service in honor of those who serve. The program aims to create an atmosphere of shared service and a WWII sense of ‘all give some’ by showing our service members, military families, and veterans that our communities value their service. Why public service? “These families are impacted in countless ways – seen and unseen – and we have an obligation to do right by them.” • In the 2012 Military Family Lifestyle Survey: • 64% of respondents said their child’s participation in • extracurricular activities was negatively impacted by deployment • 68% of respondents felt stress about debt, savings or their overall financial condition. • 41% or respondents felt like their community did not embrace opportunities to help their military children • As these statistics show, military families face unique challenges. By volunteering, you help to ensure that our military communities are equipped with the resources they need and deserve. Together, we celebrate the military family through acts of service – community service in honor of those who selflessly serve our country. http://bluestarfam.org/survey

  4. What is OHC? Operation Honor Corps is inspired by the First Lady and Dr. Biden's program, Joining Forces and a joint project of All For Good, Blue Star Families, the American Red Cross, Points of Light Institute and ServiceNation: Mission Serve, working together with the Veterans Administration, the Corporation for National and Community Service, and the Department of Defense. Operation Honor Corps will collect Honor Pledges of community service and maintain a running tally of hours of community service hours pledged and fulfilled in honor of military families, service members and veterans. OHC will also collect physical Honor Cards that your organization can fill out to thank military families. .

Operation Honor Cards is a program implemented by Operation Honor Corps that allows individuals and organizations to fill out physical Honor Cards (Print Honor Cards from the OHC Packet). • Honor Cards will be used to create an “Honor Wall” – allowing everyone to see the direct results in your community from honoring those who serve our country. • Individuals write words of support on the Honor Card, which are then mailed out to military service members, families, veterans, caregivers, etc.

Let’s Get Started! • Individuals and organizations should join Operation Honor Corps via the website www.honorcorps.org, which will promote and collect virtual Honor Pledges of community service. • If your organization or company would like to join OHC and make a significant service pledge, please contact Michelle Vaughn, Program Manager, at ohc@honorcorps.org. Make the Pledge Simply fill out this pledge card. Register Get Started. Find a Service Project Report Your Hours www.honorcards.org Help us reach the goal of 30,000,000 hours Veterans Day on November 11th!

  9. Download the OHC Packet Make sure to read through the OHC packet! You can use it as an additional guide to get started! • To download a packet, visit our website www.honorcorps.org • At the bottom of the homepage, click on the link DOWNLOAD THE OHC PACKET.

  10. Making the Pledge • Visit www.honorcorps.org, click on Register (upper right hand corner), and create an account. • Once your account is created, you can pledge the numbers of hours you would like to serve.

  11. Find Volunteer Opportunities & Service Projects Choose what act of service you will be doing in your community to honor a service member and/or military family. If you need help finding an opportunity, visit the FIND AN OPPORTUNITY tab, and search for opportunities in your area. You also find opportunities by clicking on the logos of participating organizations to get more information on their volunteer opportunities. The service does not need to be something new - if you currently deliver meals to the elderly, or your company has a current mentoring program, you can dedicate this service and connect it to the service of the military community.

Recording Your Pledge Come back to www.honorcorps.org to let us know how much of your pledge you've fulfilled! • Simply log in, click on the RECORD SERVICE tab, and fill in the information to record your completed service hours. • If you are an organization, contact the Program Manager to record your service hours. • The service hours and pledges fulfilled will be tallied for the country to see.

  13. Place the Pledge and Service Counters on Your Website Get others involved by placing the pledge counter widget on your website! Hosting a Letter Writing and Pledge Party You can hold an event with a school, business, or volunteer group to fill out honor cards with words of support and encouragement that we will deliver to military community members. • Just follow these steps: • Make an “Honor Wall” • Print out copies of the Honor Cards • Have an event and encourage everyone • to make the pledge! • 4. Search or choose your service project • 5. Post the card marked “Post • on Honor Wall” on your newly • created Honor Wall. The Honor Wall allows everyone in your community to see the direct results from honoring those who serve our country.

Writing Your Letter of Appreciation We are currently seeking letters for the following individuals: 1) Parent of a service member 2) Spouse of a service member 3) Child of a service member 4) Military Veteran 5) Active Duty Service Member (currently serving in the military) 6) Wounded Warrior 7) Caregiver (person caring for a Wounded Warrior) On your pledged hours and words of appreciation or support for the type of individual you have chosen. Hold a letter writing party, mentor children, gather supplies for care packages, adopt a highway, etc.
