  1. 5 CHAPTER SYSTEM SOFTWARE

  2. Competencies • Describe the differences between system software and application software • Discuss the four types of system software • Discuss operating systems • Describe Windows, Mac, OS, UNIX, & Linux

  3. Competencies cont. • Describe the purpose of utilities and utility suites • Identify the five most essential utilities • Discuss Windows utility programs • Describe the device drivers including printer drivers

  4. System Software • Handles technical details • Works with end users, application software, and computer hardware. • System software controls where a word processing program is stored in memory. • How commands are converted so that the system unit can process Them. • How the output is printed.

  5. System Software cont. • Four types of programs • Operating system: programs that coordinate computer resources, provide a user interface and run applications. • Utilities( service programs): perform specific tasks to managing computer resources. • Device drivers: allow I/O devices to communicate with the rest of the computer system. • Language translators: convert the programming instruction into a language that computer understand and process.

  6. Operating Systems • A collection of programs that handles technical tasks • Every computer has an operating system • Performs three types of functions • Manages computer resources • Provides user interface • Runs applications

  7. Operating System cont • Recourses: memory, HDD, printer • User interface: old OS used character based interface. • applications

  8. Features of an Operating System • Booting

  9. Booting cont • Warm boot: computer already on • Cold boot: start computer that has been turned off

  10. Features of an operating system • Features in common with application software • Icons • Pointers • Windows • Menus • Dialog boxes Provide information or request input • Help

  11. Categories of Operating Systems • Hundreds of operating systems • Three basic categories • Embedded – hand-held Or small devices like PDA’s OS stored in ROM Palm OS or windows CE • Network OS – linked computers Windows NT server, UNIX, Z/OS http://www-03.ibm.com/servers/eserver/zseries/zos/ • Stand-alone OS – desktop

  12. More on Operating Systems • OS often called software environment or platform • Operating systems commonly used by individuals • Mac OS – powerful and easy to use • UNIX – network; originally designed for Web • LINUX – non proprietary; free off Web

  13. Windows • The most popular microcomputer operating system • Comes in a variety of different versions • Windows 7 is the latest version

  14. Windows History

  15. Mac OS • An operating system designed to run on Apple computers • Not used as widely as Windows HW2 1- fill the blank • Mac OS …. is the latest version 2- Attach the main interface of this OS. 3- Introduction about this OS

  16. UNIX and Linux • Unix operating system • Originally designed to run on minicomputers on a network • Used by powerful microcomputers • Linux is a version of UNIX • Not proprietary • Open source

  17. Utilities • Specialized programs to make computing easier • Most essential utilities • Troubleshooting • Antivirus • Uninstall • Backup • File compression

  18. Windows Utilities • Backup • Disk Cleanup • Disk Defragmenter

  19. Backup

  20. Disk Cleanup

  21. Disk Defragmenter

  22. Utility Suites • A group of several utility programs bundled for sale • Buying the package is economical • Popular suites • eSafe Desktop • McAfee Office • Norton System Works

  23. Device Drivers • Specialized programs that allow communication between a device and the computer • Loaded into memory each time • When a new device is added, new device drive must be installed

  24. A Look to the FutureIBM's Aware Computer • IBM concentrating research efforts on eLiza • Handles time-consuming maintenance • Autonomic computer • Self-maintaining servers • Self-repairing • Self-protecting • Self-updating
