UBELONG Grassroots action To improve the economic and social conditions of disadvantaged communities in the developing world by empowering volunteers to work on grassroots projects driven by locally identified needs. Experiences for all To mobilize people of all backgrounds and provide them with inspiring volunteering experiences that are affordable and flexible. Connecting people To bring people together to advance cross-cultural understanding, increase awareness of international development issues and promote lifelong civic engagement. www.ubelong.org *UBELONG official IVPA approval will be released Dec. 2

Trip Overview • 4 weeks, month of June • 7-8 people chosen • Selection based on application and interview • Little or no linguistic barrier in South Africa • South African team leader with us the entire time • Will divide into smaller groups based on interest and choose a morning and afternoon project for the 4 weeks • All group members will be staying together in a volunteer house *We are excited to be a part of this new project; however, as with any international experience, changes may occur that require participant flexibility.

  5. Medical and Social Issues • Poverty • Disparities between wealthy communities and poorest living in conditions among the worst in the developing world • Townships • Urbanization • Inequitable provision of health resources • Infectious diseases • HIV/AIDS • Lack of education

Projects in Cape Town • HIV/AIDS clinic: serve impoverished communities in townships; take vitals • Clinic: share public health information to empower patients to become proactive about own health, organize workshops about nutrition, sexual education • Caregiving: after-school center; help kids with English and homework, teach, play, demonstrate good health and hygiene habits, provide positive diversion • Education: work with teachers to create lesson plans, lead classes, teach English, individualized attention to students • Microenterprise: work on economic sustainability, grant writing, monitor progress of projects

  7. Cultural Experiences Options include: • Township visit: understand reality of day-to-day life in a shanty town, history of apartheid • Drumming Workshop • Castle of Good Hope • South African food

Safety • Comprehensive program set up • Programs, housing, sites thoroughly inspected by UBELONG team • Participant preparation • Preparation briefing, mentor, pre-trip safety meeting • Local partners • Community organizations and NGOs have local contacts, understand how things work, implements safety measures • Continual program monitoring • Monitor local conditions, communicate with local partners • Communication between UBELONG and participants • Staff can be reached 24/7

Applicant Information • Applications available on www.humed.rice.edu • Due midnight Nov. 20 (emailed to humed.rice@gmail.com) • Interviews: Tues Nov. 22 starting at 3pm & Wed Nov. 23starting at 12pm • Looking for a diverse group, passionate about issues • All years eligible to apply • Group expectations: • Weekly meetings and fundraisers • No alcohol allowed on trip

Fundraising Plans • Cost of Trip: ~$3000 per person • Includes airfare, program fees, housing, food, transportation, insurance, visa • $200 due up-front, balance due 60 days before travel • Fundraisers • Personal solicitation letters • Dinner and movie nights • Boba tea and late night food sales • Reliant parking • Carwashes • MCAT course auction/raffle

This trip offers participants insight into the health issues faced by communities in sub-Saharan Africa and will provide a valuable learning experience for anyone interested in global health. While we hope to make a difference in South Africa, our main goal is that the experiences gained and lessons learned on this trip will continue to influence our decisions for the rest of our lives.
