  1. Ethnic Groups in U.S.

  2. U.S. Ethnic Distribution • While whites live in most parts of the U.S., there are areas of ethnic clusters: • African Americans mostly live in the southeast. • Hispanics are concentrated in southwest. In the north, Hispanics live in cities, in the southwest, their distribution is mixed. • Asian groups live mostly in the West • Native Americans are less than 1%, but most live in the Plain states or southwest.

  3. African American Migrations • Most African American ancestors were slaves, forced to migrate to the South in U.S. • After slavery ended, many stayed in the South as sharecroppers, working on farms. • Many African Americans moved to cities in two main waves, around World War I and World War II in response to jobs. • Segregation forced them to live in separate neighborhoods, which became ghettos. This became illegal after the Civil Rights Movement. • “White Flight”- white residents moved to suburbs in response to Black migration. • Over half of Blacks live in large cities today.

  4. Question? • How has having a mostly urban population affect Black culture in the U.S.?

  5. Changes in power for U.S. ethnicities • Over time, internal and external migrations will change a group’s power. • Stereotypes of certain groups will make them more or less attractive to the majority. • When the economy is good, generally there is more acceptance, but when it is bad, ethnic groups start blaming each other for hardships.

  6. Summary • Pg. 159-160 create a flow map of the experience of Asians in the Bay area • Pg. 160- create a multi-flow map that shows the causes and effects of barrioization of Los Angeles
