Project: WIPE OUT

Project: WIPE OUT. By Erik Mortensen and Alec Delehanty. PROBLEM. The President of the United States of America cannot decide whether or not to “wipe out” all bacteria from the world. Both me and my partner, Prof. Delehanty, have found evidence on why he should not initiate Project: WIPEOUT.

  1. Project: WIPE OUT By Erik Mortensen and Alec Delehanty

  2. PROBLEM The President of the United States of America cannot decide whether or not to “wipe out” all bacteria from the world. Both me and my partner, Prof. Delehanty, have found evidence on why he should not initiate Project: WIPEOUT.

  3. How bacteria are a problem • Some sicknesses that are produced by bacteria are salmonella, food poisoning, and even the Black Death.

  4. How bacteria are helpful • Some foods that are made by bacteria are cheese, chocolate, pickles, yogurt, bread, natto, and sausage.

  5. How bacteria are helpful (continued) • Some herbivores, warthogs for example, must eat their mother’s dung at a young age to get the bacteria needed to digest food. • Decomposers get rid of dead plants and animals, freeing their atoms to be reused and making more room for plants and animals to grow. • Only bacteria can fix nitrogen, making them essentially for ALL life on earth.

  6. How bacteria are helpful (continued) • You probably thought termites digested wood. They don't, but the microbes that live inside their guts do. By digesting wood bits, the bacteria in the termite's guts help the termites survive. In turn, the termite gives the microbes a comfy place to stay. • Some US government scientists have found a way to use a bacterium, called Deinococcus radiodurans, to help earth's environment. Scientists have added parts of different bacteria to this bacteria to form a new "super bug." This newly created bacteria will be used by the government to clean up dangerous waste on the earth.

  7. How bacteria are helpful (continued) • Bacteria are NOT viruses.

  8. Conclusion. In conclusion, bacteria are needed for many living things, including us to survive. The president should NOT get rid of bacteria. Whether it’s making cheese or decomposing dead things, we need bacteria to function and help our daily lives.
