A New Regional Climate Modeling Framework to Examine Aerosol Effects on Convective Clouds Rain gauge Improved model • Objective • Improve the ability to simulate aerosol-cloud interactions in convective clouds using a cumulus parameterization with cloud microphysics • Examine aerosol indirect effects on summer monsoon over East Asia using the new modeling framework • Approach • Link aerosols with cloud droplet nucleation and ice nucleation processes in a cumulus parameterization with cloud microphysics • Conduct regional climate simulations with the improved parameterization to understand how clouds and precipitation associated with the East Asia summer are influenced by pollution aerosols The improved model simulates precipitation very well. Impact • The updated cumulus parameterization improves the simulation of precipitation and radiative properties of convective clouds • Results show that aerosols reduce precipitation and cloud fraction by suppressing convection • Improved understanding of aerosol impacts on regional climate and provided guidance on future development in regional and global climate models.
