  1. Fort Sumter Several days after Lincoln's election in November, 1860, President James Buchanan gathered the members of his cabinet together in the White House.

  2. Fort Sumter At the Cabinet meeting, Buchanan revealed that South Carolina Governor Gist had written him demanding that the Federal Government give up the United States forts located in Charleston Harbor.

  3. Fort Sumter

  4. Fort Sumter The next day, Major Robert Anderson left the War Department, under an order signed by Lt. General Winfield Scott.

  5. Fort Sumter The order directed him to travel immediately to Charleston, South Carolina and take command of the harbor forts for the U.S.

  6. Fort Sumter Charleston lies on a peninsula which is bordered on the north by the Cooper River and on the south by the Ashley River.

  7. Fort Sumter The two rivers create a large harbor that in Anderson's day was the busiest U.S. port on the southeastern seaboard.

  8. Fort Sumter Fort Sumter lays astride the main shipping channel just inside the harbor mouth.

  9. Fort Sumter

  10. Fort Sumter The fort was designed to shield Charleston Harbor from invasion by an enemy.

  11. Fort Sumter, 1860

  12. Fort Sumter During Anderson’s movement of loyal U.S. troops to Fort Sumter, the Carolinians remained amazingly quiet. They had plenty of warning that Anderson was organizing for a movement to Fort Sumter.

  13. Fort Sumter After his inauguration, Lincoln received a report that Anderson had only 6 weeks supplies of food left; Lincoln had to make a decision

  14. Fort Sumter IF the Union held onto its property at Fort Sumter, the Confederates might rejoin the Union

  15. Fort Sumter IF Confederates attacked Fort Sumter, then the South started the war and rejected peace

  16. Fort Sumter IF he did nothing or surrendered, then (1) the Republicans who elected him would be demoralized, and (2) the North would have to invade the South or let the country be split up.

  17. Fort Sumter Lincoln refused to give it up. He authorized a supply ship be sent with food and water.

  18. Fort Sumter April 12, 1861 4:30 A.M. “Fire-eating” Confederates fired first shots at Fort Sumter because of the approaching supply ship

  19. Fort Sumter

  20. Fort Sumter April 14, 1861 Anderson surrendered. The Stars and Stripes were taken down. The Stars and Bars were put up. This meant WAR!

  21. Fort Sumter With Southern aggression, Lincoln needed an army. He called on the states to send men to fight for the preservation of the Union.

  22. Fort Sumter Remaining slave states (DE, MD, VA, KY, TN, AR, NC, MO) must decide to... (1) send men to fight with the Union or (2) secede to fight with Southern brethren
