Development of a Device to Test Small Samples of Resilin in Insects Team Members: Matthew Bokulic, Emily Hussey, and Rachel Vandergriff Advisor: Dr. Daniel Dudek The goal of this project is to develop a device to test the mechanical properties of small samples of the elastic protein resilin from different species of insects. These properties could ultimately be used to determine differences between species in order to create synthetic forms for man-made designs based on natural function. Key Features: • Able to test resilin samples on the order of 100-500 microns • Resilin samples remain submerged and hydrated during testing • Easily adaptable for various species of insects Deliverables: • Device and testing setup with LabVIEW code • Inventor drawings for entire setup • Preliminary test results for resilience, dynamic modulus, and phase shift Neff et al. 2000
