  9. 3 for 3 Tips and Tricks

  10. Tip 1: Locking Application Pages – Tory Douglas • Issue: Locking SharePoint 2007 application pages (_layouts) to prevent users from accessing them.  This is helpful not only in preventing users from accessing application pages they don’t need to be accessing on a public facing web site, but also in preventing search engines from crawling application pages.  • Solution: • To lock down your SharePoint 2007 application pages, issue the stsadm command as follows: • stsadm -o activatefeature -url <site collection url> -filename ViewFormPagesLockDown\feature.xml • This can be reversed (unlocked) by issuing the following command: • stsadm -o deactivatefeature -url <site collection url> -filename ViewFormPagesLockDown\feature.xml • Note:  By default, this SharePoint 2007 feature is deactivated, unless the site was created using the “Publishing Site” template.  Additionally, if you have anonymous access enabled prior to activating this feature, you need to disable anonymous access and then re-enable anonymous access again.  • Another similar capability is available for removing people picker AD lookups.  stsadm -o setpropertypeoplepicker-nowindowsaccountsfornonwindowsauthenticationmode

  11. TIP 2: VSE for SharePoint User Guides (Tim Heuer) • This is the User Guide, Samples and Walkthroughs for the tools for developing custom SharePoint applications with the Visual Studio 2005 extensions for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0, version 1.1 (VSeWSS 1.1). The user guide has sections: • Starting out in SharePoint Development • Walkthrough of the VSeWSS User Interface including the WSP View • The Team Site Project • The Blank Site Project • The List Definition Project • The Web Part Project • The Workflow Projects • Project Item Templates • Best Practices with VSeWSS • Changes from 1.0 to 1.1 • The User Guide included is an CHM file that does not require any additional software to view. The Visual Studio extensions for Windows SharePoint Services are expected to be released for Visual Studio 2008 in June 2008

  12. Tip 3: Scanning into Lists (Hafthor Stefansson) • Dark Blue Duck offers The Scanning Enabler 2007TM • The product enhances SharePoint adding support for Desktop Scanning. Scan documents directly into SharePoint as easily as you would add files from your My Documents folder. You can save the scanned documents as searchable pdf, mdi or tif formatted files. Features Seamlessly integrated with SharePoint User Interface • Adds Scanning functionality to all new and existing document libraries and lists • Use a Desktop Scanner or a shared Multifunction printer (MFP) • Use Barcode pages to specify the Document Library folder the scanned document should be stored in or the List Item it should be attached to • Use Barcode pages to specify a SharePoint Content Type and one or more Site Column Values (metadata) • Uses Microsoft Office Optical Character Recognition (OCR) to create searchable documents • Supports batch scanning • Compatible with Windows SharePoint Services V3 and Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 indexing and search • Supports custom metadata capture and workflow • Supports all Microsoft SharePoint server farm architectures • Easy to install and easy to uninstall • Supports Desktop Scanner Sharing • Creates searchable pdf, mdi and tif formatted documents • Multilanguage support • Supports image stamping • Use the Scanning EnablerTM Capture application to bulk load your paper documents to SharePoint • Implementation support provided by email and phone.
