18. Example 1: captured Swedish ships, 1777-1778 The Swedish Ship Elizabeth, sailing to Barcelona, was captured by the Zephyr on November 28, 1778. Interrogated were: master Andreas Backman (29), mariner Nils Bagge (22) and carpenter Swen Tolgren (28). They were born near Göteborg (in Odensala and Släp Socken). The Swedish ship Gustav den Fredie, sailing to Brest, was captured by the Sandwich on September 9, 1777. Interrogated were: master Jacob Lilliander (43), mariner Johan Jornstrom (34) and mariner Matthias Bloom (40). They were born in Abo, Tarnea, and Stockholm.

Example 2: the American schooner John, captured April 1778 On April 6, 1778, the American schooner John (formerly known as Judith, fifty tons) was seized on the Atlantic Ocean by two British ships of war, HMS Diligence (Captain Davy) and HMS Antelope (Captain Everitt). The John, originating from Boston, was on its return voyage from Bilbao, Spain, carrying blankets and iron. The Bostonian merchant John Winthrop junior owned the ship. The John was taken to Portsmouth, England. The crew of six men all originated from New England: Massachusetts. A commissioner of the High Court of Admiralty (HCA) interrogated three of them on May 11 at the Three Tuns Tavern in Portsmouth.
