  1. Sustainability National Garden Clubs Inc. The Living Earth Environmental Studies School Series II, Course IV

  2. Sustainable developments are those that "meet present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs"(WECD, 1987). "Sustainable means using methods, systems and materials that won't deplete resources or harm natural cycles" (Rosenbaum, 1993) Sustainability "identifies a concept and attitude in development that looks at a site's natural land, water, and energy resources as integral aspects of the development" (Vieira,1993) "Sustainability integrates natural systems with human patterns and celebrates continuity, uniqueness and placemaking" (Early, 1993)

  3. We can’t solve today’s problems at the same level of thinking at which they were created. Albert Einstein

  4. Rule #1 Humans are a part of the system, not apart from the system. Rule #2 See Rule #1

  5. The 3-legged stool of Sustainable System Design

  6. Natural Capital Earth’s air, energy, water, soil, wildlife, biodiversity, minerals, and nature’s waste disposal, pest control, and recycling services – goods and services produced by earth’s natural processes that support life…and economies.

  7. Conventional economists believe: We can use technology to replace any scarce resource; and Depletion and degradation of natural resources will not limit future growth.

  8. Ecological Economists believe: We need to unite ecology and economics; We need to encourage earth-sustaining forms of economic development; and We need to discourage earth-degrading forms of economic growth; Advocate full-cost pricing.

  9. We have a capitalist market economic system, not a ‘free market’ system. Drive out competition and gain control of market prices. Lobby for unrestricted global free trade. Lobby for government subsidies, tax breaks, or regulations to gain an advantage. Withhold information to prevent consumers from making informed choices. Maximize profits.

  10. GDP vs. GNH [(PPP): purchasing power parity: is a theory of long-term equilibrium exchange rates based on relative price levels of two countries. In other words, PPP allows you to compare the standard of living between countries by taking into account the impact of their exchange rates..]

  11. GNH: Gross National Happiness. An attempt to define an indicator that measures quality of life or social progress in more holistic and psychological terms than gross domestic product (GDP). • Economic Wellness • Environmental Wellness • Physical Wellness • Mental Wellness • Workplace Wellness • Social Wellness • Political Wellness Map courtesy Adrian White, University of Leicester Proposed policies in Bhutan must pass a GNH review based on a GNH impact statement that is similar in nature to the Environmental Impact Statement required for development in the U.S.

  12. Social Diversity Gender Equity Tenure & Participatory Management Social Equity Security Indigenous & Traditional Peoples Elimination of Poverty

  13. Ecosystem Sustainability 1. Protect biodiversity 2. Don’t use renewables faster than nature can replace them. 3. EmphasizeEcological Restoration

  14. Sustainability is the embodiment of stewardship.
