  1. Unit 4 Fraud, Health and Safety Laws, Morality Laws, and Laws Protecting Peace and Order

  2. What to Expect…. • This Unit will focus more on how we “human beings in society” are expected to act in public. • How we are in relation to other people around us. • The laws we will discuss are “multi-categorical.” What does this mean?

  3. Objectives • CLP. 4.1 Describe laws against Fraud. • CLP.4.2 Compare criminal health and safety laws with morality laws. • CLP. 4.3 Examine laws protecting peace and order. • Main concept: Fraud, health and safety laws, morality laws, laws protecting peace and order, laws pertaining to the effective administration of justice.

  4. Trust • Certain behaviors undermine the TRUST individuals place in other individuals are criminalized under the social contract. • Certain personal behaviors are deemed counter to the social contract. • What is the Social Contract? • Community standards regarding expected public conduct are codified within the criminal code.

  5. Out of the norm…. Ignore the first five people who say “good morning” to you.To signal the end of a conversation, clamp your hands over your ears and grimace. While riding in an elevator, gasp dramatically every time the doors open. When in elevator with only one other person, tap them on the shoulder and pretend it wasn’t you.Finish all your sentences with “In accordance with the prophecy…”In a crowded situation, slap your forehead repeatedly and mutter, “Shut up, all of you just shut up!”At lunchtime, get down on your knees and announce, “As God as my witness, I’ll never go hungry again!”As often as possible, skip rather than walk.Run out of the zoo screaming "They're loose! They’re all loose!"

  6. Social Norms Violation • Extra Credit: • If possible and definitely LEGALLY(!!!!!) try to violate a “social norm” by doing one of the following activities. It would be great if you could have someone video tape it, but if not, do the activity and report back to us. Have fun! Please be appropriate and do not put yourself or anyone else in harm’s way. DO NOT MAKE ME REGRET ASSIGNING THIS EXTRA CREDIT ASSIGNMENT

  7. Social Norm Violations • Sing loudly on a public bus, subway, or train. • Stand on your chair in a restaurant and recite the U.S. Pledge of Allegiance. • Continuously jump up and down while waiting in a check-out line at a grocery store. • Order food at a restaurant for you and your “imaginary friend.” Pretend to talk to your “friend.” • Be VERY polite to someone….over the top….say hello to every person you see. • Get into an elevator that is crowded with strangers, and after the doors close, introduce yourself to the group. • Stand in a crowded elevator and face the opposite direction of everyone else. • Sit next to someone you don’t know in public when there are other seats available

  8. Fraud • Constitutes deceitful conduct designed to manipulate another person to give up something of value. • EXAMPLE: • John Mango's fire: A Toronto businessman, John Mango hired someone to set fire to his business for the insurance money. Things got quite out of hand, killing one person during the fire and forcing many families to leave the area until the fire could be put out. Mango was charged with second degree murder on top of his fraud charges. • The Titanic: Everyone knows the story of the Titanic, but not everyone realizes that some believe it's part of a conspiracy to pull off a huge insurance fraud. The Olympic, Titanic's sister ship, was damaged and rendered useless during one of its voyages-and some believe that the Titanic as it sunk was actually the Olympic. Conspiracy theorists note several inconsistencies in the performance and construction of the "Titanic" that indicate the Titanic sinking was a case of swapped ships.

  9. Health and Safety Laws • Prevent people from engaging in certain private behaviors. •  “the health of the people is the supreme law,”Saluspopulisupremalexesto • Example:
