But not only good news! • Studies Salverda: • 71% of young students has a job; they combine work and school! • Youth unemployment rates in NL are highly underestimated when the number of hours worked are taken into account • Youth employment rates in NL are highly overestimated when the number of hours worked are taken into account • Those working students displace low skilled labour supply • In NL the proportion of unemployed youth (15-24) in relation to total unemployed people (15-74) is above EU-average (28% against 21%) • A lot of young people get an allowance because of disability UWV, 5th of December 2012, Brussels

Conclusions • Youth unemployment is low and employment rates are high in the Netherlands • When part-time work, the amount of working students and the number of disabled young people are taken into account the situation is much less positive • There are general reasons and possibly some specific reasons for low unemployment among younger people • There are some serious threats for their position, but also favorable developments • Active Labour Market Policy can help to improve the prospects of young people in Europe (Orlandi) UWV, 5th of December 2012, Brussels
