  13. Sample Record …as well as an abstract, eligibility information, the COS Keywords assigned to the record, the type of funding, as well as sponsor contact information.

  14. Three types of searches • Simple Search • Advanced Search • Search Wizard

  15. Simple Search The Simple Search interface is for basic searching. Entering free text in the text box will search all of the Funding Opportunities fields for your search criteria.

  16. Advanced Search Advanced Search: Use this option for creating custom searches with a variety of search fields from which to choose.

  17. Advanced Search This search will look for records that contain the terms “brain” or “cancer” in any field, records with a deadline on or after 9/1/08, and for which research conducted in the District of Columbia is eligible.

  18. Advanced Search You can also limit your search results by using the Exclusion Fields. You can filter out information in which you are not interested. You can add subtract search fields necessary to your search.

  19. Search Wizard Search Wizard Use the Funding Opportunities Search Wizard for a step-by-step process to help you set up your funding search.

  20. Search Wizard Note: As you fill in your search criteria, the Search Summary on the left side of the screen will show what you’ve chosen so far. It will also tell you how many opportunities your search currently returns. You may choose to see those results at any time. Now select which sponsor types interest you.

  21. Search Wizard Click on ‘Show Results’ to see the list of funding opportunities for your specified criteria.

  22. Search Results By default, the results list is sorted by relevancy, but you can choose to sort by Grant Title, Sponsor, Deadline, or Amount. Click on the hyperlinked column headings to sort the list accordingly.

  23. Search Results Faceted search results take the results set from your search and break it down into "facets" according to key categories. From your results list, you can see at a glance how many opportunities are for “Training or Scholarship or Fellowship.” You can then click on any of these "facets" to see opportunities with those criteria only.

  24. Search Language – Other Tricks You can use these special characters to connect your search terms for specific results: • Wild Card *– find variations on a word – e.g., ENVIROMENT* finds profiles with words such as ENVIRONMENTAL and ENVIRONMENTS. • Proximity w/# – find words used together but not necessarily in an exact phrase – e.g., WIND w/2 ENERGY finds profiles where these two words are separated by not more than two words, such as those with the phrase WINDTURBINE ENERGY.

  25. Search Language – Other Tricks • Exact Phrase “ ” – find a precise phrase – e.g., WIND ENERGY in quotation marks finds profiles where these two words appear together as a phrase. • Precedence( ) – execute a series of search commands in a particular order – e.g., (HIV OR AIDS) NOT EDUCATION finds profiles with the terms HIV and/or AIDS, then excludes those with the word EDUCATION.

  26. Funding Alerts

  27. Save a Search The Save Search option will allow you to save searches that you have created to your COS Workbench.

  28. From your COS Workbench you can control which of your saved searches you receive e-mail alerts about. Simply check the check box in the Weekly ‘Email Column’ of your Workbench.
