  3. Diana Baumrind • Was born in 1927 in New York City • Received her B.A. and Ph.D. in psychology at University of California Berkley • She is most well known for her Parenting Styles

Authoritative parenting Authoritative parents set limits and enforce rules, yet they are flexible and listen to their children They may demand maturity, but they are usually forgiving (not punishing) if the child falls short They consider themselves guides, not authorities (as authoritarian parents do) or friends (as permissive parents do) Effects: Children are successful, articulate, happy with themselves, and generous with others Teachers and peers usually like these children, especially in societies in which individual initiative is valued

Permissive Parenting • Permissive parenting: is a parenting style based on few demands • Parents have low expectations • Nurturing and accepting • Don’t feel responsible to discipline • Let children make their own way • _______________________________________________________ • Effects: • Unhappy children who lack self control • Strained peer relationships • Immaturity • Very dependent into adulthood

Neglectful • Parents are unattached and not involved with their children’s life • Many times adults will dismiss kids emotions and opinions • They will provide the basic needs for kids such as food, shelter etc. but will not give them emotional needs • Sometimes comes because of the use of drugs • Consequences: • Attachment disorder • Children who were never in any kind of a healthy relationship may have a hard time for the rest of their lives with simple connecting with other people. • Reactive Attachment disorder • People with RAD • Adolf Hitler, Ted Bundy, Charles Manson, Saddam Hussein, Edgar Allan Poe, Jeffrey Dahmer

Criticisms of Baumrind’s theory • Original sample had little. • Focused on attitude more than on daily interaction. • Some authoritarian parents are loving toward children • Some permissive parents guide their children by words, not rules. • Overlooked a childes role in relationship with parents
