  2. THE BAUMRIND STUDY Four important dimensions of parenting: • Disciplinary strategies • Warmth and nurturance • Communication styles • Expectations of maturity and control

  3. Four Parenting Styles • Authoritarian parenting • Authoritative parenting • Permissive parenting • Uninvolved / Negligent parenting

  4. Authoritarian Parenting • Dictatorial / Harsh • Low on warmth and Nurturance • High in parent to child communication • Low in child to parent communication • High on expectations • Strict in Discipline • Rules are non negotiable • Approach is Parent-Centred

  5. Authoritative Parenting • Establish rules and guidelines • Responsive • Willingness to listen • Nurturing and Forgiving • Developmentally appropriate limits

  6. Permissive Parenting • Very few demands • Low expectations of maturity and control • Are more responsive than demanding • Are nurturing and Communicative • More of a ‘friend’ than a ‘parent’ • Avoid confrontation

  7. Uninvolved/Negligent Parenting • Detached • Fulfill only basic needs • Few demands • Low responsiveness • Very little communication • Indifferent

  8. Impact of Parenting Styles • Authoritarian: Children are obedient and proficient but they rank lower in happiness, self-reliance, social competence and self-esteem • Authoritative: Children are happy, autonomous, socially responsible, capable, successful and self regulated with internalized moral standards

  9. Impact of Parenting Styles • Permissive: Children rank low in happiness and self-regulation. They are impulsive, aggressive and low in taking responsibility • Uninvolved: Children lack self-control, have low self-esteem, are less competent than their peers, and can be non compliant and aggressive.
