  4. Tips for Families MAKE A CALENDAR JUST FOR YOUR SENIOR ACTIVITIES Daily Bulletin every day • Family and counselor discussions, HONESTY • Deadlines • READ EMAILS, Naviance • Be supportive • Ask your son/daughter “How can I help?”

  5. Who is Responsible for What?

What Colleges are Looking For: Main components to an application: • Grades • Rigor of courses • Test scores • Extra-curriculars / Involvement • Recommendations • Essay The student’s essay and the teacher/counselor recommendations shine a light on all components **Should ask teachers in person and follow up with a thank you!

  7. ESSAYS • Usually are pretty general and can be modified to match multiple schools - remember to make it “feel” like it was written for that school though! • Be unique! Get admission officers’ attention! • To see if you can write well enough for their college program • To get a sense of whether your values and style would fit diversify/benefit their college • To see if you care enough about the college to take some time writing to it and about it • Mr. Rios offers a FREE after school essay workshop, date TBD

Points to consider Two Year Schools Four Year Schools • Less expensive (ex: 1 year UCC= $4804 vs. Montclair State=$10,808.10 + fees • If grades are not high enough, chance to earn higher grades and then transfer • Learn a profession or vocation and go into workforce • No SAT, take placement test • NJ STARS • More expensive, consider debt when student graduates • Well-rounded education and Bachelor’s Degree • On campus and off campus learning opportunities (internships, student clubs, study abroad) • Most require SAT or ACT, more involved application

Sending & Releasing Scores • It is your responsibility to release and send your scores! • You can do this by phone or online (Go to www.act.org or www.collegeboard.org) • Just have school codes ready to go! • Our code: 311510 • Be sure to save the confirmation for your records. • Keep all records and copies of reports in one place. • ACT Versus SAT????

Transcript Release/Request • 2 step process: • Use paper Transcript Release Form • Submit request in Naviance***SENDS COUNSELOR ALERT • The Transcript Release Forms are available in the Counseling offices or through Naviance • All transcript requests (to be sent to a college) must be submitted at least 15 school days prior to the deadline. • Transcript requests will not be processed until both tasks are completed.

  15. NCAA Eligibility www.eligibilitycenter.org • Speak to your counselor and coaches about Division I, II and III requirements, discuss intenttions • Register with the NCAA Eligibility Center ($ cost to the parents) • Sliding Scale • Use the Eligibility Worksheet

College Visits • Please call attendance on the day of or the day before the visit. • Counts as an unexcused absence until documentation is brought to Attendance, is then changed to excused. • Proof of visit must be demonstrated, letter or registration card stamped by college representative. • “Demonstrated Interest” • Gives you a “real feel” for life on campus

Scholarships • Naviance – log on to access scholarship information and download applications • Check the Daily Bulletin for related information • Ask employers, local community groups, parents’/students’ employers, colleges • Use Internet for additional scholarships • Adhering to deadlines – essays, letters of recommendation, transcripts • REMIND 101
